Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Skopje — Arrival

Private transfer from Skopje Airport. Afternoon at leisure to explore the city center: Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge, and the rebuilt Old Bazaar area. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 2: Skopje — Ottoman & Modern City

Full private guided tour of Skopje. Morning: the Old Bazaar — one of the oldest and largest in the Balkans, with its mosques, caravanserais, and hamams. Visit the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the Daut Pasha Hamam (now National Gallery), and the Kapan Han. The Church of St. Spas contains the masterpiece iconostasis carved by the Mijak masters. Afternoon: modern Skopje — the controversial but fascinating Skopje 2014 project that transformed the city with neoclassical buildings and monumental statues. Visit the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, Mother Teresa Memorial House, and the Holocaust Memorial Center (North Macedonia lost 98% of its Jewish population in WWII). Overnight in Skopje.

Day 3: Matka Canyon + Tetovo

Morning at Matka Canyon: boat ride into the Vrelo Cave system and hiking along the canyon trails. Afternoon: drive west to Tetovo. Visit the extraordinary Painted Mosque (Šarena Džamija), a unique Ottoman mosque built in 1438 and later redecorated with over 30,000 eggs used in the plaster for the exterior paintings. The colorful geometric and floral patterns covering every surface are unlike any other mosque in the world. Continue to the Arabati Baba Tekke, a well-preserved Bektashi dervish monastery with beautiful gardens. Return to Skopje. Overnight.

Day 4: Mavrovo National Park & Bigorski

Drive into Mavrovo National Park. The mountain scenery, alpine lakes, and traditional villages make this one of the most beautiful regions of the Balkans. Visit the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski — the carved iconostasis is the highlight, but the setting overlooking the Radika Canyon is equally magnificent. Lunch at a traditional mountain restaurant. Afternoon: drive through Galicica National Park to Lake Ohrid, stopping at panoramic viewpoints. Arrive in Ohrid. Sunset walk along the lakefront. Overnight in Ohrid.

Day 5: Ohrid — UNESCO Full Day

Complete exploration of Ohrid with your private guide. Morning: St. Jovan Kaneo (the iconic cliffside church), the Church of St. Sophia with its 11th-century frescoes, and Tsar Samuel’s Fortress. The Ancient Theatre offers the most photogenic view — the stage with the lake as backdrop. Afternoon: the Icon Gallery (one of the world’s finest collections of Orthodox icons), the Robevci House (19th-century merchant’s mansion), and the old bazaar. Boat ride on the lake. Overnight in Ohrid.

Day 6: St. Naum + Prespa Lake

Morning along the lake’s eastern shore to the Monastery of St. Naum. Private boat ride on the springs. Continue to Lake Prespa, the lesser-known sibling of Lake Ohrid, where the borders of North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece meet. Visit the island of Golem Grad (Snake Island) on Lake Prespa, accessible by boat — home to Roman ruins, several endemic snake species, and a 14th-century church. Return to Ohrid. Overnight.

Day 7: Bitola + Prilep

Drive to Bitola. Visit Heraclea Lyncestis with your guide explaining the significance of the floor mosaics. Walk Shirok Sokak, Bitola’s beautiful pedestrian street. Continue to Prilep, North Macedonia’s tobacco capital. Hike (or drive) up to Marko’s Towers (Markovi Kuli), the dramatic remains of a 14th-century fortress perched on massive granite rocks. The views over the Pelagonia plain are spectacular. Return to Skopje. Farewell dinner at the Old Bazaar. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 8: Skopje — Last Morning & Departure

Morning at leisure. Optional: Mount Vodno cable car to the Millennium Cross (66m tall, one of the largest crosses in the world at 1,066m elevation). The panorama takes in Skopje and the mountains beyond. Last souvenir shopping in the Old Bazaar. Airport transfer. After eight days with your private guide, you’ve experienced the authentic heart of Macedonia — a country where East truly meets West.
