Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Skopje — Arrival in the City of Statues

Transfer from Skopje Airport to your hotel. Afternoon walk through the city center: Macedonia Square, the colossal Warrior on a Horseback statue, the triumphal Porta Macedonia arch, and the banks of the Vardar River lined with cafes and restaurants. Cross the Stone Bridge into the Old Bazaar. Welcome dinner with Macedonian wine tasting — Vranec (bold red), Temjanika (aromatic white), and the unique Stanushina grape variety found only in North Macedonia. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 2: Skopje — Ottoman Bazaar & Matka Canyon

Morning deep exploration of the Old Bazaar, one of the largest and best-preserved Ottoman marketplaces in the Balkans. Visit the Daut Pasha Hamam (now the National Gallery), the Čifte Hamam, and the Kapan Han (a 15th-century caravanserai). The bazaar’s narrow streets are lined with goldsmiths, tea houses, and traditional sweet shops. Afternoon: drive to Matka Canyon. Boat ride into Vrelo Cave — the journey through the narrow gorge with its towering cliffs is as impressive as the cave itself. Hike along the canyon trails with spectacular views. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 3: Veles Winery + Stobi Archaeological Site

Drive south to Veles. This town, dramatically set on both sides of the Vardar River, is home to one of North Macedonia’s most unique wineries — built in the shape of a medieval castle. Tour the cellars and taste their award-winning wines. Continue to Stobi, the largest and most important archaeological site in North Macedonia. Founded in the 4th century BC and later a major Roman city, Stobi features an impressive theater (capacity 7,600), a bishop’s basilica with well-preserved floor mosaics, Roman baths, and the remains of a synagogue — evidence of the Jewish community that once thrived here. Overnight near Stobi or continue to Bitola.

Day 4: Bitola + Galicica National Park

Morning in Bitola: Shirok Sokak pedestrian street, the Clock Tower, the Yeni Mosque, and the Old Bazaar. Visit Heraclea Lyncestis with its extraordinary floor mosaics from the 5th-6th centuries AD. Afternoon: drive through Galicica National Park, the mountain range separating Lake Ohrid from Lake Prespa. Stop at the pass for views over both lakes simultaneously. Continue to the traditional village of Janche, where a local resident has invested in building guesthouses using traditional materials and methods. Overnight in Janche.

Day 5: Ohrid — UNESCO’s Lakeside Jewel

Full day in Ohrid, arguably the most beautiful town in the Balkans. Morning: the Church of St. Jovan Kaneo — the iconic cliff-perched church that appears on every Macedonian postcard. Explore the Church of St. Sophia, Tsar Samuel’s Fortress, and the Ancient Theatre. Walk through the old town’s narrow lanes past traditional houses with their distinctive upper-floor overhangs. Afternoon: the Bay of Bones museum (prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement), the Robevci House (a masterpiece of 19th-century Ohrid architecture), and the Paper Workshop where paper is still made using a replica of Gutenberg’s press. Sunset lakeside. Overnight in Ohrid.

Day 6: St. Naum Monastery & Lake Ohrid

Drive along the eastern shore to the Monastery of St. Naum. Built in 905 AD by St. Naum of Ohrid (a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, creators of the Cyrillic alphabet), this monastery sits on a bluff right at the Albanian border. The peacocks roaming the gardens and the springs of the Black Drin River feeding the lake create an almost paradise-like atmosphere. Boat ride on the crystal-clear springs. Afternoon: free time in Ohrid — swim in the lake (water temperature reaches 26°C in summer), take an optional kayaking trip, or just relax at a lakeside cafe. Overnight in Ohrid.

Day 7: Mavrovo National Park & Bigorski Monastery

Return journey north through Mavrovo National Park. Visit the submerged Church of St. Nicholas in Lake Mavrovo (accessible by causeway when water levels are low). Continue to the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski, home to the most magnificent wood-carved iconostasis in the Balkans. The detail is staggering — every one of the 500+ figures tells a biblical story. Lunch at a traditional mountain restaurant. Afternoon arrival back in Skopje. Farewell dinner in the Debar Maalo neighborhood, Skopje’s bohemian quarter. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 8: Skopje Morning & Departure

Morning at leisure for last explorations: Mount Vodno cable car to the Millennium Cross (66m tall, one of the world’s largest crosses) with panoramic views over Skopje, or the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle. Airport transfer. Eight days in the heart of the Balkans — a land of ancient lakes, Byzantine monasteries, Ottoman bazaars, and warm hospitality.
