Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Skopje — Arrival in the Balkan Capital

Arrive at Skopje International Airport. Transfer to Hotel Panoramika near the Stone Bridge and Kale Fortress. Afternoon orientation walk through Macedonia Square with its colossal statue of Alexander the Great (officially “Warrior on a Horseback”). Cross the iconic Stone Bridge (Kameni Most), built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, into the Old Bazaar (Čaršija) — one of the Balkans’ largest and best-preserved Ottoman marketplaces. Welcome dinner featuring Macedonian specialties: tavče gravče (baked beans), ajvar (roasted red pepper spread), and rakija. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 2: Skopje — City of Contrasts & Matka Canyon

Morning: explore Skopje’s contrasts. Visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa (she was born in Skopje in 1910), the Church of St. Spas with its intricately carved wooden iconostasis (the work of 19th-century master craftsmen who took 7 years to complete it), and the Mustafa Pasha Mosque (1492). Afternoon: drive to Matka Canyon, just 15km from Skopje but worlds away. This dramatic gorge on the Treska River features soaring limestone cliffs and the Vrelo Cave — believed to be among the deepest underwater caves in the world. Take a boat ride into the cave and hike along the canyon’s trails. Overnight in Skopje.

Day 3: Mavrovo National Park & Bigorski Monastery

Drive into the mountains to Mavrovo National Park, North Macedonia’s largest and most beautiful park. Stop at Lake Mavrovo, a stunning alpine reservoir with the half-submerged Church of St. Nicholas (flooded when the lake was created). Continue through the dramatic Radika Canyon to the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski, perched on a cliff overlooking the gorge. The monastery’s iconostasis, carved from walnut wood from 1829-1835, is considered one of the finest examples of woodcarving in the Balkans — over 500 human and animal figures carved into a single panel. Lunch at Kukjata na Mijacite, a traditional restaurant in the Mavrovo region serving authentic Macedonian mountain cuisine. Continue to the traditional village of Janche, built entirely in the regional stone-and-wood style. Overnight in Janche.

Day 4: Vevcani Springs & Struga

Morning visit to Vevcani, a mountain village famous for its 1,400-year-old carnival celebrating the Orthodox New Year and its spectacular natural springs. Walk the wooden pier along the springs where crystal-clear water emerges from the base of Mount Jablanica. Continue to Struga on the shores of Lake Ohrid. This charming town is where the Drin River flows out of the lake. Visit the Drin River springs and the Struga Poetry Evenings monument (an international poetry festival held here since 1962). Afternoon at leisure on the lakeshore. Overnight in Ohrid at Hotel Aqualina or Nova Riviera.

Day 5: Ohrid — The Jerusalem of the Balkans

Full day exploring Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. The city once had 365 churches — one for each day of the year. Morning: the Church of St. Jovan Kaneo, perched on a cliff above the lake, is the most photographed spot in North Macedonia. Visit the Ancient Theatre (built by the Greeks, later used by Romans for gladiator fights), Tsar Samuel’s Fortress (10th century, with panoramic views over the lake to Albania), and the Church of St. Sophia (11th century, with well-preserved frescoes). Afternoon: stroll the old town’s narrow streets, explore the paper workshop displaying the original Gutenberg press used here, and visit the Bay of Bones — a unique reconstruction of a prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement built on the lake. Sunset over Lake Ohrid — one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes (up to 3 million years old). Overnight in Ohrid.

Day 6: St. Naum Monastery & Galicica National Park

Drive along the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid through Galicica National Park — views over both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa from the mountain pass. Arrive at the Monastery of St. Naum, built in the 10th century on a bluff overlooking the lake where it meets the Albanian border. St. Naum’s tomb inside the monastery is said to still emit healing energy — you can place your ear to his stone sarcophagus and supposedly hear his heartbeat. Explore the monastery’s peacock-filled gardens and the springs of the Black Drin River, where water emerges crystal-clear from underground. Take a boat ride on the springs — the water visibility exceeds 20m. Afternoon: beach time at one of Ohrid’s lakeside beaches. Overnight in Ohrid.

Day 7: Bitola — The City of Consuls

Day trip to Bitola, North Macedonia’s second city and the “City of Consuls” (once hosting 12 foreign consulates). Walk Shirok Sokak, the pedestrian street lined with neoclassical buildings, cafes, and concert halls. Visit Heraclea Lyncestis, an ancient city founded by Philip II of Macedon (Alexander the Great’s father) in the 4th century BC. Unlike Stobi (which is Roman), Heraclea is uniquely Greek-Hellenistic. Its floor mosaics, depicting geometric patterns and mythological scenes with incredible detail, are among the finest in the Balkans. Afternoon: visit the Bitola Museum and the old bazaar. Dinner at a traditional Bitola restaurant. Return to Ohrid for the last night.

Day 8: Ohrid Morning & Departure

Morning at leisure in Ohrid — swim in the lake, last souvenir shopping for Ohrid pearls (unique handmade jewelry using fish scales), or visit the National Workshop for Handmade Paper. Transfer to Skopje or Ohrid Airport. Eight days exploring the land where both the Cyrillic alphabet and the Ohrid Literary School (the foundation of Slavic literacy) were born.
