Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Skopje to Ohrid — Arrival at Europe’s Oldest Lake
Arrive at Skopje Airport. Drive south through Macedonia’s dramatic mountain scenery to Ohrid (3 hours). Check into your 4-star lakeside hotel. Afternoon orientation walk along the lakefront promenade. Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes (up to 288m), estimated to be 2-5 million years old. It’s home to over 200 endemic species — species found nowhere else on Earth, including the famous Ohrid trout. Welcome dinner with lake fish specialties and Macedonian wine. Overnight in Ohrid.
Day 2: Ohrid — The Jerusalem of the Balkans
Full day dedicated to Ohrid’s extraordinary heritage. The city earned its nickname “Jerusalem of the Balkans” because it once had 365 churches (and still has many). Morning: the Church of St. Jovan Kaneo — the 13th-century church perched on a cliff above the lake is one of the most photographed sites in the Balkans. The Church of St. Sophia (11th century), the seat of the Ohrid Archbishopric, features some of the most important Byzantine frescoes outside Constantinople. The Ancient Theatre, built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later used for Roman gladiator fights, still hosts summer performances with the lake as a backdrop. Afternoon: free time for swimming in the lake, exploring the cobblestone streets, or visiting the unique Paper Workshop. Overnight in Ohrid.
Day 3: St. Naum Monastery & Galicica Views
Morning drive along Lake Ohrid’s eastern shore, past fishing villages and small beaches, to the Monastery of St. Naum. This 10th-century monastery, founded by one of the fathers of Slavic literacy, occupies a stunning position at the lake’s southern end. The monastery’s frescoes, the peacocks in the garden, and St. Naum’s tomb are all highlights. Take a rowboat ride on the crystal-clear springs of the Black Drin — the water is so pure you can see the bottom 20m below. Afternoon: return through Galicica National Park, stopping at viewpoints over both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. Evening at leisure in Ohrid — perhaps a sunset dinner at a lakefront restaurant. Overnight in Ohrid.
Day 4: Free Day — Kayaking, Beaches or Vevcani
Today is yours to design. Options include: (1) Kayaking on Lake Ohrid with a professional guide exploring hidden coves and beaches; (2) Scuba diving — Lake Ohrid offers unique freshwater diving with visibility exceeding 15m, Bronze Age settlement remains, and diverse endemic species; (3) Day trip to Vevcani, the mountain village famous for its spectacular natural springs and 1,400-year-old carnival tradition; (4) Simply relax on one of Ohrid’s beaches, swim, read, and soak in the Balkan atmosphere. Farewell dinner at a traditional Ohrid restaurant. Overnight in Ohrid.
Day 5: Bay of Bones & Return to Skopje
Morning visit to the Bay of Bones Museum — a unique reconstruction of a prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement from 1200-700 BC, built on a platform over the lake. The museum displays artifacts recovered from the lakebed. After this final cultural stop, drive back to Skopje (3 hours). Transfer to the airport. Five days at Europe’s most beautiful lake will stay with you long after you leave.
