Day 1: Arrival in Montevideo & Introduction to Mate Culture
Arrive at Carrasco International Airport and transfer to your boutique hotel in Montevideo. After settling in, your guide takes you on an afternoon introduction to Uruguay’s national obsession — mate. Visit a traditional yerba mate shop in Ciudad Vieja to learn about the ritual, select your own mate gourd, and practice the proper technique of sharing mate in a ronda (circle). Walk through the Mercado del Puerto to experience the sights, sounds, and aromas of traditional Uruguayan cuisine. Day 2: Estancia Arrival — First Rides & Asado Night
After breakfast, drive 3 hours into the interior of Uruguay to your first estancia — a traditional working cattle ranch in the heart of gaucho country. Upon arrival, meet the estancia’s gauchos who will be your hosts and riding companions. After a warm welcome with mate and homemade empanadas, receive your first riding orientation — learn about Criollo horses, the local saddles (aperos) with sheepskin pads, and neck-reining techniques. Head out for your first 2-hour ride through rolling pastures dotted with cattle, ostrich-like nandu birds, and ancient ombu trees. Return to the estancia for the evening’s highlight: a traditional asado cooked over open fire. Watch the gauchos prepare the fire, arrange cuts of beef, lamb, and chorizo on the parrilla, and learn about the philosophy of slow-cooked Uruguayan barbecue. Dine under the stars in the estancia’s open-air quincho (barbecue house), accompanied by local Tannat wine.

Day 3: Gaucho Day — Cattle Work & Horseback Skills

Participate in cattle herding across open pampas — learn to move cattle between pastures, check fences, and round up strays. During the ride, gauchos share stories and teach traditional riding techniques passed down through generations. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of an ombu tree featuring torta frita (fried dough) and empanadas prepared over a campfire. In the afternoon, try your hand at lassoing and learn about the different gaucho tools: the facon (knife), rastra (silver belt), poncho, and bombachas (traditional riding pants). Return to the estancia for sundowners on the porch, watching the sky transform over the endless pampas. Dinner is another spectacular asado with different cuts and preparations.

Day 4: Beach Ride to Cabo Polonio — Sand Dunes & Sea Lions
After an early breakfast, depart the estancia and head east toward the coast. Arrive at the entrance to Cabo Polonio National Park, where normal roads end and the adventure begins. Transfer to a 4×4 dune truck for the thrilling ride across shifting sand dunes to reach Cabo Polonio — a tiny, off-grid fishing village with no paved roads, no running water, and no electricity (buildings use generators and solar panels). Check into your rustic but charming accommodation. Walk to the 19th-century Cabo Polonio Lighthouse for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the village’s colorful shacks spread across the dunes. Then visit the Reserve of Sea Lions (Reserva de Lobos Marinos) — one of South America’s largest sea lion colonies. From the viewing platforms, watch hundreds of sea lions basking on the rocky islands, barking, playing, and diving into the waves. Day 5: Cabo Polonio Exploration — Dunes, Beaches & Isolation
Wake up in one of South America’s most unique villages. After a simple breakfast, spend the morning exploring Cabo Polonio’s wild beauty. Hike across the massive sand dunes that separate the village from the interior — the contrast of golden sand against the blue Atlantic is breathtaking. Walk along entirely deserted beaches stretching for kilometers in both directions, where the only company is seabirds and the occasional sea lion swimming offshore. For the adventurous, climb the lighthouse (if open) for the ultimate 360-degree view of this remote paradise. Visit the tiny schoolhouse and the handful of artisan shops selling handicrafts from local families. After a leisurely seafood lunch, take another 4×4 truck ride to explore more remote sections of the national park — hidden coves, shipwreck remains on the beach, and viewpoints over the rocky coastline. Drive south along the coast to Punta del Diablo, a former fishing village turned laid-back surf destination. Check into your beachfront accommodation. Spend the afternoon exploring this charming town — walk along Playa de los Pescadores (Fishermen’s Beach) where colorful fishing boats line the shore, browse the artisan market, and watch surfers catch waves at Playa de la Viuda. The town’s bohemian vibe, with its unpaved streets and wooden cabins, offers the perfect contrast to Cabo Polonio’s remote solitude. Arrive in Montevideo by early afternoon with free time to explore independently — revisit the Ciudad Vieja, shop for souvenirs at the Feria de Tristan Narvaja (if it’s a Sunday), or relax at a beachfront cafe along the Rambla de Pocitos. In the evening, celebrate your gaucho adventure with a farewell tango and dinner show at one of Montevideo’s traditional venues, featuring live music, professional dancers, and a multi-course Uruguayan feast.
