Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Pristina — Europe’s Newest Capital

Arrive at Pristina International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation walk through Europe’s youngest capital: the iconic Newborn monument (repainted annually on Independence Day), the striking Brutalist National Library of Kosovo (voted one of the world’s ugliest buildings, now beloved as architectural heritage), and Mother Teresa Boulevard with its cafes and shops. Visit the Mother Teresa Cathedral, whose construction Mother Teresa herself blessed before her death. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant featuring flija (layered crepe pie) and tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt) — classic Kosovo dishes. Overnight in Pristina.

Day 2: Prizren — Kosovo’s Cultural Capital

Drive to Prizren (1.5 hours), Kosovo’s most beautiful city. Nestled at the foot of the Sharr Mountains with the Bistrica River running through its heart, Prizren feels like stepping into an Ottoman fairy tale. Walk the cobblestone streets of the old bazaar, visit the exquisite Sinan Pasha Mosque (1615) with its stunning interior calligraphy, the 14th-century Church of St. George, and the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Succor — three faiths within a 5-minute walk. Climb to Prizren Fortress for the most iconic view in Kosovo: the entire city spread below with the river, the mosques’ minarets, and the mountains beyond. Visit the Albanian League of Prizren museum. Afternoon: discover Prizren’s traditional filigree silver craftsmanship — artisans create intricate jewelry using techniques unchanged for centuries. Overnight in Prizren.

Day 3: Gjakova + Decani Monastery — Ottoman Charm & UNESCO Art

Morning drive to Gjakova, a town that feels frozen in the 16th century. Its bazaar (Çarshia e Madhe) is one of the Balkans’ longest and best-preserved, with cobblestone streets lined by workshops where craftsmen still work in wood, metal, and textiles. Visit the Hadum Mosque (1595) and the clock tower. Continue to Visoki Decani Monastery, a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery and UNESCO World Heritage site. The exterior is a masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic fusion, but the interior is the real treasure — over 1,000 frescoes covering every surface, among the finest examples of Byzantine-influenced medieval Serbian art. The monastery is protected by KFOR peacekeepers, a reminder of Kosovo’s complex recent history. Overnight in Gjakova or Prizren.

Day 4: Peja & Rugova Canyon — Mountain Kosovo

Drive west to Peja, the largest city in western Kosovo, dramatically situated at the entrance to the Rugova Canyon. Visit the Patriarchate of Peja Monastery (13th century), another UNESCO site and the historical seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Its red-walled church and frescoed interior have survived centuries of turmoil. Afternoon: drive into the spectacular Rugova Canyon — one of Europe’s longest and deepest canyons, with sheer limestone walls rising 1,000m on either side. Stop at the White Drin Waterfall (25m high) and hike to the “Sleeping Beauty” cave. Take the zip-line across the canyon for an adrenaline rush with unbeatable views. Overnight in Peja.

Day 5: Rahovec Wine Region & Velika Hoca

Morning: visit the Rahovec wine region, Kosovo’s premier wine-producing area with a tradition dating back 2,000 years to Illyrian and Roman times. Taste local Vranac (red) and Smederevka (white) at a family-run winery. Afternoon: visit Velika Hoca, a Serbian enclave village with 12 Orthodox churches (some from the 14th century) and a wine-making tradition that dates to the Nemanjić dynasty. Meet a local family who produce wine using methods passed down through 25 generations. Wine tasting with homemade rakija (fruit brandy) and a traditional dinner prepared by your hosts. This evening offers a rare, authentic window into Kosovo’s multicultural fabric. Overnight in Rahovec or Prizren.

Day 6: Pristina — Bear Sanctuary & Novo Brdo

Return to the Pristina area. Morning: visit the Bear Sanctuary Prishtina, a remarkable conservation project that has rescued over 20 brown bears formerly kept in captivity at private restaurants throughout Kosovo and Albania. Walk the elevated viewing platforms to see these magnificent animals in spacious natural enclosures. Afternoon: drive to Novo Brdo, the ruins of a massive medieval fortress and mining town that was once one of Europe’s richest silver mines. The panoramic views from the fortress plateau are extraordinary. Overnight in Pristina. Farewell dinner at Soma Book Station, a beloved Pristina institution combining literature, food, and the city’s vibrant cafe culture.

Day 7: Gracanica Monastery & Departure

Morning visit to Gracanica Monastery (1321), another UNESCO masterpiece. This perfectly proportioned church with its five domes is considered the pinnacle of Byzantine-influenced Serbian medieval architecture. The interior frescoes, especially the Dormition of the Virgin, are breathtaking. Time permitting, visit the nearby Ulpiana archaeological site — Roman and Byzantine ruins spanning eight centuries of history. Transfer to Pristina Airport. You leave with a nuanced understanding of Europe’s newest country and its deep historical roots.
