Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Skopje — Arrival & City Discovery

Airport pickup and transfer to Hotel Panoramika. Afternoon walk through Skopje’s eclectic city center: Macedonia Square (with its colossal statue), the Stone Bridge (connecting the modern city to the Ottoman Old Bazaar), and Mother Teresa Memorial House. The museum is a beautiful, minimalist tribute to the city’s most famous daughter, who was born just a few streets away. Evening stroll through the Debar Maalo neighborhood — Skopje’s bohemian quarter filled with restaurants and bars. Welcome dinner with Macedonian cuisine.

Day 2: Matka Canyon & Mavrovo National Park

Morning at Matka Canyon. Boat ride into Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the world. The canyon’s limestone cliffs, some rising 1,000m, create a dramatic setting. Afternoon: drive into Mavrovo National Park. Stop at the submerged Church of St. Nicholas in Lake Mavrovo, then continue through the Radika Canyon to the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski. The carved walnut iconostasis (1829-1835) is simply one of the finest woodcarvings anywhere — over 500 figures in astonishing detail. Lunch at Kukjata na Mijacite for authentic mountain cuisine. Overnight in the Mavrovo area.

Day 3: Galicica National Park + Ohrid

Morning drive south through Galicica National Park, the mountain range dividing Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The views from the pass take in both of these ancient lakes — Ohrid on one side, Prespa on the other. Descend to Ohrid, the crown jewel of North Macedonia. Afternoon: the Church of St. Jovan Kaneo (the iconic cliffside church), the Ancient Theatre (3rd century BC, still used for summer performances), and Tsar Samuel’s Fortress for panoramic views. Walk through the old town’s cobblestone streets. Sunset over the lake. Overnight in Ohrid at Hotel Aqualina.

Day 4: St. Naum Monastery + Return to Skopje

Morning along the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid to the Monastery of St. Naum (10th century). The peacock-filled gardens, the saint’s tomb (where you can “hear his heartbeat”), and the crystal-clear springs of the Black Drin make this one of the most serene places in the Balkans. Take a boat ride on the springs. After lunch, begin the return journey to Skopje (3.5 hours). Evening at leisure in Skopje. Overnight at Hotel Panoramika.

Day 5: Skopje Old Bazaar & Departure

Morning in Skopje’s Old Bazaar — one of the Balkans’ largest Ottoman marketplaces. The maze of narrow streets houses goldsmiths, tea houses, sweet shops (try the baklava and tulumba), and traditional craftsmen. Visit the Mustafa Pasha Mosque (1492) and the Daut Pasha Hamam. Quick stop at the Church of St. Spas to see its extraordinary carved iconostasis. Transfer to airport. Five days capturing the essence of North Macedonia — canyon, mountains, UNESCO lake, and one of Europe’s most underrated capitals.
