Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Madrid
Welcome to Madrid! Transfer to your hotel. Evening stroll through the literary quarter (Barrio de las Letras). Welcome dinner at a traditional taberna — cocido madrileno, jamon iberico, and your first taste of Spanish wine culture. Overnight in Madrid.
Day 2: Zaragoza & Northern Spain
Drive northeast to Zaragoza on the Ebro River. Visit the Basilica del Pilar — one of Spain’s most important pilgrimage sites with its stunning Goya frescoes. Lunch: try ternasco de Aragon (roast lamb) and the region’s Garnacha wines. Continue north through changing landscapes into the Basque Country. Overnight in Bilbao.
Day 3: Bilbao & San Sebastian
Morning at the Guggenheim Museum. Drive along the Basque coast to San Sebastian. Afternoon free to explore La Concha Bay. Evening curated pintxos tour through the Old Town — 6 bars, 6 pintxos, 6 txakoli wines. Overnight in San Sebastian.
Day 4: Santander & Cantabria
Drive west along the Green Spain coast to Santander, the elegant capital of Cantabria. Visit the Magdalena Peninsula and the Sardinero Beach — Spain’s royal family’s summer retreat. Seafood lunch at the Puerto Chico: Cantabrian anchovies (the world’s finest), rabas (fried squid rings), and percebes (goose barnacles). Afternoon visit to the Altamira Museum — a replica of the “Sistine Chapel of Prehistoric Art.” Overnight in Santander.
Day 5: Picos de Europa & Asturias
Drive into the Picos de Europa National Park — jagged limestone peaks rising from green valleys. Stop at the Lakes of Covadonga, glacial lakes at 1,100 meters. Visit the Covadonga Sanctuary, the symbolic birthplace of the Spanish nation. Arrive in Asturias. Dinner: fabada asturiana (hearty bean stew with chorizo, morcilla, and pork) and Asturian cider — poured the traditional way from above the head. Overnight in Oviedo.
Day 6: Oviedo & Gijon
Morning in Oviedo: the stunning pre-Romanesque churches of Naranco (UNESCO), the Cathedral, and the statue of Woody Allen (he called Oviedo “a fairy tale”). Midday: visit an Asturian cheese dairy — taste Cabrales (blue cheese aged in limestone caves), Gamoneu, and Afuega’l Pitu. Afternoon in Gijon, a vibrant coastal city. Stroll the Cimavilla fishing quarter and the San Lorenzo beach promenade. Seafood dinner at a sidreria. Overnight in Oviedo.
Day 7: Burgos & Return to Madrid
Drive south to Burgos. Visit the Burgos Cathedral — a UNESCO Gothic masterpiece and burial place of El Cid. Lunch: morcilla de Burgos (blood sausage with rice — the city’s signature dish) and lechazo asado (roast suckling lamb). Continue to Madrid. Farewell dinner in the La Latina neighborhood — the ultimate tapeo experience. Overnight in Madrid.
Day 8: Depart Madrid
Morning visit to the Mercado de San Miguel for last-minute jamon, cheese, and olive oil purchases. Transfer to Madrid Barajas Airport. Hasta luego!
