Itinerary Highlights

Day 1-2: Baku — Old & New

Arrival in Baku. Day 2: full city tour — Icherisheher UNESCO Old City, Heydar Aliyev Center, Flame Towers, Carpet Museum. Evening Azerbaijani cuisine and Baku Boulevard promenade. Overnight in Baku.

Day 3: Nakhchivan — The Exclave

Flight to Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan’s exclave separated from the mainland by Armenia. This ancient land was once a major stop on the Silk Road. Visit the Momine Khatun Mausoleum (12th century) — a masterpiece of Seljuk architecture with intricate geometric brickwork. Explore the Ashabi-Kahf Cave, a sacred site mentioned in the Quran. Visit the Nakhchivan Khans’ Palace and the Noah’s Mausoleum — locals believe Noah is buried here after the Ark landed on nearby Mount Ararat. Overnight in Nakhchivan City.

Day 4: Alinja Castle & Ordubad

Climb to Alinja Castle, the “Machu Picchu of Azerbaijan” — a fortress perched on a dramatic mountain peak, known as the “impregnable” castle that withstood a 14-year siege by Tamerlane. Afternoon in Ordubad, a perfectly preserved Silk Road town with three historic mosques and traditional courtyard houses. Walk the cobblestone streets unchanged for centuries. Overnight in Nakhchivan.

Day 5: Ganja — Azerbaijan’s Second City

Fly back to Baku, then drive to Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second-largest city and the birthplace of the great poet Nizami Ganjavi. Visit the Nizami Mausoleum, the Bottle House (a house decorated with 50,000 glass bottles), and the Shah Abbas Mosque (17th century). Afternoon visit to Lake Goygol — a stunning alpine lake formed by an earthquake in 1139, surrounded by forests at 1,556 meters. Overnight in Ganja.

Day 6: Sheki — Silk Road Splendor

Drive to Sheki. Visit the Khan’s Palace (1762) with its incredible shebeke stained glass. Explore the Caravanserai and the Kish Albanian Church (1st century). Evening Sheki halva tasting and piti (traditional lamb stew slow-cooked in clay pots). Overnight in Sheki.

Day 7: Lahij & Shamakhi

Drive via the mountain road to Lahij, the 5th-century copper-smithing village. Watch master craftsmen at work. Continue to Shamakhi: visit the Juma Mosque and Diri Baba Mausoleum. Overnight in Shamakhi.

Day 8: Lankaran & Caspian Coast

Drive south along the Caspian coast to Lankaran in the Talysh region — Azerbaijan’s subtropical south. This area feels like a different country: tea plantations, citrus orchards, and humid forests. Visit the Lankaran Fortress (18th century) and the Khan’s House. Taste Lankaran tea at a tea plantation — Azerbaijan’s tea culture rivals that of its neighbors. Afternoon at the Hirkan National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve with endemic ironwood trees. Caspian Sea swim. Overnight in Lankaran.

Day 9: Yanar Dag & Absheron Fire

Drive back to Baku along the coast. Afternoon visit to Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain) and Ateshgah Fire Temple. Farewell dinner at a traditional Baku restaurant with Mugham music — Azerbaijan’s soulful UNESCO-recognized musical tradition. Overnight in Baku.

Day 10: Depart Baku

Morning at the Taza Bazaar. Transfer to the airport. Goodbye, Land of Fire!
