Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Porto — UNESCO Riverside City

Land at Porto Airport. Transfer to hotel in the historic Ribeira district (UNESCO). Afternoon walking tour: São Bento railway station’s 20,000 azulejo tile panels, the Clérigos Tower (climb 225 steps for the best city view), Livraria Lello — one of the world’s most beautiful bookshops (said to have inspired J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts). Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia for port wine tasting at a historic lodge — learn the difference between Tawny, Ruby, Vintage, and White Port. Dinner at a traditional tasca — try francesinha (Porto’s decadent sandwich smothered in cheese and beer sauce). Overnight in Porto.

Day 2: Porto — Art, Food & the Douro River

Morning: visit the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and its stunning gardens. Explore the Bolhão Market, Porto’s historic food market. Afternoon: Douro River cruise under the six bridges. Visit the Palácio da Bolsa with its extraordinary Arab Room, inspired by Granada’s Alhambra. Evening: Fado performance in an intimate setting — Portuguese soul music that UNESCO recognizes as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Overnight in Porto.

Day 3: Douro Valley — The World’s Oldest Demarcated Wine Region

Scenic drive or train journey along the Douro River into the Douro Valley (UNESCO World Heritage). The landscape is breathtaking: terraced vineyards carved into steep schist slopes, the serpentine river below, and whitewashed quintas (wine estates) perched on the hillsides. Visit two historic quintas for tours and tastings — learn how port wine is made, from foot-treading in granite lagares to aging in oak barrels. Lunch at a quinta with panoramic valley views. Arrive in Pinhão, the heart of the Douro. Visit Pinhão’s railway station with its beautiful azulejo panels depicting the wine harvest. Evening: sunset over the terraced vineyards. Overnight in Pinhão.

Day 4: Douro River Cruise & Historic Villages

Morning Douro River cruise from Pinhão through the most spectacular section of the valley — past terraced vineyards that produce the grapes for vintage Port, with the occasional traditional rabelo boat (historic port wine transport) gliding by. Visit the village of Provesende, a perfectly preserved 18th-century manor town. Afternoon: drive the dramatic N-222 road (voted “World’s Best Driving Road”), hugging the river with endless vineyard views. Visit Lamego’s Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, climbing the magnificent 686-step baroque staircase. Return to Porto. Farewell dinner at a Michelin-recommended restaurant. Overnight in Porto.

Day 5: Depart Porto

Morning at leisure. Visit the Mercado do Bolhão for last pasteis de nata. Airport transfer.
