Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Zurich to Vaduz
Transfer to Liechtenstein’s tiny capital. Evening walk through Städtle and up to Vaduz Castle viewpoint. Welcome dinner with Liechtenstein wines. Overnight in Vaduz.
Day 2: Fürstensteig — The Prince’s Trail
One of Liechtenstein’s classic ridge hikes. The Fürstensteig was carved into the rock in 1898 on the orders of Prince Johann II. The trail climbs 400m from Vaduz through limestone cliffs with steel cables for security, emerging onto the Kuhgrat ridge at 2,123m. The panorama: Rhine Valley, Lake Constance in the distance, and the Swiss and Austrian Alps forming walls on both sides. 12km, 800m ascent, 5-6 hours. Return via the Gafadura hut for lunch. Overnight in Vaduz.
Day 3: Malbun & Augstenberg Summit
Transfer to Malbun. Today’s goal: Augstenberg (2,359m), a summit on the Austrian border with 360° views of the Silvretta, Rätikon, and Bernese Alps. The trail climbs through alpine meadows then a rocky summit ridge — chamois and golden eagles are frequently spotted. Descend via the Sareis ridge for a different perspective. 10km, 750m ascent, 5 hours. Afternoon: relax at a Malbun mountain hut with käsknöpfle (Liechtenstein’s cheesy version of spätzle). Overnight in Malbun.
Day 4: Rätikon Panorama Trail & Gutenberg Castle
Transfer to the Naafkopf area in southern Liechtenstein where the borders of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Austria meet. Hike a section of the Rätikon circuit with views of the Schesaplana (2,965m). 8km, 500m ascent, 4 hours. Afternoon: visit Gutenberg Castle in Balzers and its rose garden. Farewell dinner at the Torkel restaurant, a 300-year-old wine press house. Overnight in Vaduz.
Day 5: Rhine Valley & Depart
Morning e-bike along the Rhine to Schaan, Eschen, and Ruggell — Liechtenstein’s northernmost point. Visit the Postage Stamp Museum. Transfer to Zurich.
