Day 1: Arrive Tenerife South — Island of Eternal Spring

Touch down at Tenerife South Airport. The Canary Islands sit off the coast of Morocco but belong to Spain — a volcanic archipelago where the climate is perpetually spring-like (18-25°C year-round), earning Tenerife the nickname “Island of Eternal Spring.” The island is dominated by Mount Teide (3,718m), Spain’s highest peak and the world’s third-tallest volcano measured from its ocean base. Transfer to your hotel in Costa Adeje, the upscale coastal area with volcanic black-sand beaches and views of La Gomera across the channel. Evening: sunset welcome dinner at a seafood restaurant overlooking the Atlantic. Overnight in Costa Adeje.

Day 2: Teide National Park — Spain’s Rooftop

Drive 1.5 hours from sea level to 2,356m through seven microclimates — from palm groves through Canary pine forests to the surreal volcanic landscape of Teide National Park (UNESCO World Heritage). The terrain here is so otherworldly that NASA tested Mars rovers on these lava fields. Take the cable car to 3,555m (La Rambleta), just 163m below the summit. The views from here sweep across Tenerife and, on clear days, to Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Walk the Mirador de La Fortaleza trail along solidified lava flows in colors ranging from obsidian black to oxidized red. Visit the Roques de García, the iconic rock formations including the “Finger of God.” Afternoon: descend through the Corona Forestal, the largest continuous pine forest in the Canaries. Overnight in Costa Adeje.

Day 3: Whale Watching & Los Gigantes Cliffs

Morning departure from Los Cristianos harbor on a dedicated whale-watching ecoyacht. The channel between Tenerife and La Gomera is one of the world’s best places to see pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins in the wild year-round — the resident population of short-finned pilot whales is estimated at over 250 individuals. The catamaran cruises along the coast to the Los Gigantes cliffs — vertical basalt walls plunging 600m from summit to sea, among the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Swim stop in Masca Bay, accessible only by boat, where the crystal-clear water reveals volcanic rock formations below. Afternoon: kayak or snorkel in the bay. Overnight in Costa Adeje.

Day 4: Anaga Rural Park — The Primeval Forest

Drive to Tenerife’s northeastern tip and enter the Anaga Rural Park (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) — a mountainous peninsula of jagged peaks and deep ravines draped in laurisilva, a subtropical cloud forest that covered southern Europe 20 million years ago and now survives only in the Canaries, Madeira, and Azores. Hike the Sendero de los Sentidos (Path of the Senses), where moss-covered laurel trees, tree heathers, and ferns create an atmosphere more Jurassic than modern. The forest captures moisture from the trade winds, creating its own perpetual mist — the trees literally drink from clouds. Visit the hamlet of Taganana, a whitewashed village clinging to the mountainside above the Atlantic, for lunch of local goat cheese, wrinkled potatoes (papas arrugadas) with mojo sauce, and fresh fish. Day 5: Masca Valley & Teno Rural Park

Drive the winding road into the Masca Valley, a gorge so deep and isolated it was a pirate hideout for centuries. The village of Masca (population ~90) is a cluster of stone houses balanced on a ridge between towering basalt walls. Morning hike (2-3 hours) on the PR-TF 59 trail with views of the Barranco de Masca canyon leading to the sea. Afternoon: drive to Punta de Teno, the westernmost point of Tenerife, where the lighthouse stands sentinel over the spot where the Teno Massif meets the Atlantic. The volcanic rock formations, sculpted by millions of years of erosion, create one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. Overnight in Costa Adeje.

Day 6: La Orotava & Puerto de la Cruz

Morning visit to La Orotava, widely considered the most beautiful town in the Canaries — a perfectly preserved 16th-century colonial town of wooden-balconied mansions, cobblestone streets, and the extraordinary Casa de los Balcones (1632), a mansion with five intricately carved Canarian balconies made of tea wood (heartwood pine). Visit the Hijuela del Botánico, a small but exquisite botanical garden with a 200-year-old dragon tree (Dracaena draco), the mythical tree whose red sap was called “dragon’s blood” and used in medieval medicine. Afternoon: drive down to Puerto de la Cruz and the Lago Martiánez, a stunning complex of seawater pools designed by Canarian artist César Manrique — volcanic rock, whitewashed terraces, and turquoise water with Mount Teide as backdrop. Overnight in Puerto de la Cruz.

Day 7: La Laguna & Santa Cruz

Morning in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (UNESCO World Heritage), Tenerife’s former capital and the first non-fortified Spanish colonial city — its grid layout became the model for cities across Latin America, including Havana, Lima, and Cartagena. The 16th-century cathedral, pastel-painted mansions, and tree-lined plazas still radiate colonial elegance. Afternoon: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the modern capital. Visit the Auditorio de Tenerife, Santiago Calatrava’s swooping white opera house that has become the island’s architectural icon. Walk the Rambla de Santa Cruz and visit the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África for last souvenirs. Farewell dinner with Canarian wine from the island’s five DO wine regions. Overnight in Puerto de la Cruz.

Day 8: Depart Tenerife

Morning at leisure — last swim at Playa Jardín, César Manrique’s black-sand beach garden. Transfer to Tenerife North or South Airport.
