Day 1: Arrive Maumere, Flores — Gateway to the Dragon Islands

Arrive at Frans Seda Airport (MOF), Maumere, on the island of Flores — named by 16th-century Portuguese explorers who called it Cabo das Flores (Cape of Flowers). Flores is one of Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands, stretching 354 km east-west, formed by volcanic activity along the Sunda Trench. It’s famous for two extraordinary discoveries: Kelimutu’s tri-colored crater lakes, and the Liang Bua cave where Homo floresiensis — the “Hobbit” — was discovered in 2003 (a 1.1m-tall hominid species that lived on Flores until 50,000 years ago, contemporaneous with Homo sapiens).

Afternoon coastal drive to Moni (90 km, 3 hours), a cool mountain village at 500m altitude on the slopes of Mount Kelimutu. The road winds through coconut plantations, traditional villages with distinctive Flores-style houses (wooden structures on stilts with steep thatched roofs), and dramatic coastal cliffs where the Flores Sea is impossibly blue. Stop at the Sikka weaving village to watch ikat (traditional tied-dyed weaving) being made by hand — a craft practiced in Flores for over 1,000 years, with each village having its own distinctive patterns. Overnight in Moni (early night — tomorrow starts at 4 AM).

Day 2: Kelimutu Tri-Colored Lakes & Drive to Bajawa

4:30 AM departure for Kelimutu National Park, reaching the crater rim in darkness. As the sun rises over the Flores Sea to the east, the three crater lakes of Kelimutu reveal themselves — and their extraordinary colors. Lake Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is typically dark green or black, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) is turquoise or blue-green, and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched Lake) ranges from chocolate brown to deep red. The colors change over time due to volcanic gas emissions and mineral reactions — in the 1980s, the lakes were red, white, and blue. The local Lio people believe the lakes are the resting places of souls: the young in turquoise, the old in dark green, and evildoers in the red lake.

After sunrise at Kelimutu, drive west across the spine of Flores to Bajawa (180 km, 5-6 hours). The interior of Flores is a landscape of active volcanoes, terraced rice fields, and traditional Ngada villages that preserve pre-Christian animist traditions. Stop at a traditional village (Bena or Gurusina) — clusters of thatched houses arranged around megalithic stone altars, with ngadhu (male) and bhaga (female) ancestor poles, and carved wooden statues representing clan ancestors. The Ngada still perform buffalo sacrifices at these altars. Arrive in Bajawa, a cool mountain town at 1,100m with views of the symmetrical cone of Mount Inerie. Overnight in Bajawa.

Day 3: Bajawa to Labuan Bajo — Across Flores

Morning visit to the Bajawa traditional market and the Bena megalithic village, one of the most beautiful in Flores — nine clan houses arranged in two parallel rows on a hill, with Mount Inerie as a dramatic backdrop. Then the long drive west to Labuan Bajo (350 km, 8-9 hours), the jumping-off point for Komodo National Park. The road crosses the heart of Flores — green valleys, Catholic churches (Flores is 85% Catholic, a legacy of Portuguese missionaries), and spectacular coastal views as you descend to the port town. Labuan Bajo, once a quiet fishing village, is now Indonesia’s adventure tourism capital, with a waterfront lined with liveaboard dive boats, seafood restaurants, and sunset bars. Overnight in Labuan Bajo.

Day 4: Komodo National Park — Dragons, Pink Beaches & Manta Rays

Full-day boat excursion through Komodo National Park (UNESCO World Heritage, 1986, 1,817 km² of land and sea). This is one of the most spectacular full-day trips in Indonesia.

Morning: Padar Island. A 30-minute climb (600 steps) to the summit for the iconic view — three crescent-shaped bays with beaches of white, black, and pink sand, the turquoise sea between them, and the rugged silhouette of Komodo and Rinca islands on the horizon. Sunrise at Padar is the money shot of Indonesian travel photography.

Mid-morning: Komodo Island (or Rinca Island, depending on park ranger assignment). Trek in search of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) — the world’s largest lizard, growing to 3m and 70kg, found only on these five Indonesian islands. Komodo dragons are apex predators: they hunt deer, wild boar, and water buffalo, capable of bringing down prey much larger than themselves through a combination of sharp serrated teeth, venom glands (discovered 2009 — previously thought to be bacteria), and septicemia from the prey’s wounds. Walking through the dry savanna with a park ranger carrying a forked stick (the only defense), spotting dragons basking in the sun or lumbering through the undergrowth, is a genuine Jurassic Park experience. The dragons can run at 20 km/h — fast enough to catch a human — so following the ranger’s instructions is essential.

Afternoon: Pink Beach (Pantai Merah). One of only seven pink sand beaches in the world, created by microscopic Foraminifera (red coral organisms) that have been ground into the white sand by wave action. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear water reveals intact coral gardens, parrotfish, angelfish, and if lucky, manta rays gliding through the channel. Manta Point is a regular cleaning station for manta rays (wingspan up to 7m) — snorkeling above these gentle giants as they somersault through the water is one of the ocean’s great experiences. Return to Labuan Bajo at sunset, the sky painted orange and purple behind the islands. Overnight in Labuan Bajo.

Day 5: Labuan Bajo — Departure

Morning at leisure. Visit the local fish market for a final taste of Flores seafood, or browse for Flores ikat in the Labuan Bajo shops. Transfer to Komodo Airport (LBJ) for departure.
