Day 1: Arrive Vaduz — The Prince’s Capital
Arrive at Zurich Airport. Transfer 1.5 hours to Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein — the world’s sixth-smallest country (160 km²), a doubly landlocked German-speaking principality wedged between Switzerland and Austria. Vaduz has about 5,700 residents and no airport, no train station, and no highway — yet it’s one of the wealthiest places per capita on Earth, hosting more registered companies than citizens. Check into your hotel with views of Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz) perched on the hillside above — the actual residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein, not open to the public, but a permanent and photogenic presence. Evening: walk Städtle, Vaduz’s main street, a surprisingly modest strip of boutiques, cafes, and the occasional Rolls-Royce. Overnight in Vaduz.
Day 2: Vaduz — Art, History & Royal Heritage
Morning at the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, a striking black basalt cube housing the state’s modern and contemporary art collection — featuring works from the Prince of Liechtenstein’s private holdings, one of the world’s finest old master collections (though the old masters are mostly kept in Vienna). Visit the Liechtenstein National Museum, telling the principality’s unique story: how the Liechtenstein family bought the territory in 1699-1712 to gain a seat in the Imperial Diet (they never actually visited for 100 years), and how the country survived Napoleon, two world wars, and a 2013 shutdown threat caused by a dispute over abortion law — the Prince threatened to move to Austria if he lost his veto power. He won. Visit the Postage Stamp Museum — Liechtenstein’s stamps are miniature works of art and a significant export. Afternoon: hike up to Vaduz Castle for the view (the castle interior is private), then continue up the Fürstensteig trail for panoramic views of the Rhine Valley with Switzerland on one side and Austria on the other. Day 3: Malbun — Alpine Switzerland Without the Crowds
Drive 30 minutes to Malbun (1,600m), Liechtenstein’s only ski resort — a single valley of lifts, hiking trails, and alpine meadows that feels like Switzerland without the premium price tag. Morning: hike the Fürstin-Gina-Weg (Princess Gina Trail), a 2-hour ridge walk with views into Austria and the Rätikon mountains, named after Prince Franz Joseph II’s wife who died in a car crash in 1989. Spot marmots whistling among the rocks. Afternoon: visit the Gutenberg Castle in Balzers, a stunning 12th-century fortress on a hill that’s been continuously inhabited — it now hosts cultural events and a rose garden in the inner courtyard. Day 4: Rhine Valley & Depart
Morning bike ride along the Rhine River on the well-maintained path connecting Liechtenstein’s 11 municipalities — the entire country is only 25km long, so you can bike end-to-end in about 2 hours. Visit the Red House, a 14th-century tower house in Vaduz with attached vineyards still producing wine. Transfer to Zurich airport.
