Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Statia — The Golden Rock

Fly from St. Maarten (20 minutes) to F.D. Roosevelt Airport, named not for the US president but for a local ancestor. St. Eustatius (21 km², population 3,200) was once the busiest port in the Americas. In the 18th century, this tiny Dutch island traded with all sides of every war — the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars — earning it the nickname “The Golden Rock.” At its peak, 3,000 ships a year anchored in Oranje Bay. On November 16, 1776, the American brig Andrew Doria sailed into port and fired a 13-gun salute — the first foreign acknowledgment of American independence. Today, Statia is a quiet island of heritage ruins, exceptional diving, and the Quill — a perfectly formed dormant volcano. Check into your hotel in Oranjestad. Evening walk through the Upper Town and Lower Town ruins. Overnight in Oranjestad.

Day 2: The Quill Volcano & Botanical Garden

Morning hike into the Quill (pronounced “Kwil”), a 600m dormant volcano with a rainforest-filled crater. The trail descends from the rim into the crater floor where massive elephant ear plants, silk cotton trees (kapok), and rare orchids thrive in the protected microclimate. The 2-hour hike is moderate and rewarding — look for the endemic Statia morning glory and the Antillean iguana. Afternoon: visit the Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden, a 5.3-hectare garden dedicated to preserving Caribbean flora. Overnight in Oranjestad.

Day 3: Statia National Marine Park — The Caribbean’s Best-Kept Diving Secret

Statia’s waters have been protected since 1996, and the results are extraordinary. The island sits on a submerged volcanic ridge, creating dramatic drop-offs, pinnacles, and coral-encrusted walls. Dive sites include the Charlie Brown wreck (a 100m cable-laying ship sunk as an artificial reef in 2003, now covered in orange cup coral), the Double Wreck (two 18th-century anchors and cannons in 18m of water), and the Blue Bead Hole — where divers search for the famous “Statia blue beads,” 17th-century glass trade beads that still wash out of archaeological deposits. Two-tank morning dive. Afternoon: snorkel at Crooks Castle, a sheltered bay with healthy coral and turtles. Overnight in Oranjestad.

Day 4: Oranjestad — The Golden Rock Revealed

Morning tour of Oranjestad. Visit Fort Oranje (1636), the best-preserved fort on the island where the famous “First Salute” to the United States took place. Walk the cobblestone streets of Upper Town past restored 18th-century merchant houses. Visit the St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum in the 18th-century Simon Doncker House. Afternoon: explore Lower Town, where the warehouses once stored sugar, cotton, tobacco, and slaves — the dark underbelly of Statia’s golden age. The ruins, reclaimed by tropical vegetation and the sea, are haunting. Visit the Dutch Reformed Church, a 1755 stone shell open to the sky since a hurricane in the 19th century. Overnight in Oranjestad.

Day 5: Zeelandia Beach & Depart

Morning at Zeelandia Beach, a 3km stretch of wild Atlantic coast on the windward side — not for swimming (rough surf and currents) but spectacular for walking and beachcombing. Visit the Lynch Plantation Museum. Transfer to the airport for the flight back to St. Maarten.
