Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Cappadocia
Fly from Istanbul to Kayseri. Afternoon: Göreme Open-Air Museum, Pasabag fairy chimneys, Avanos pottery. Evening: optional Whirling Dervish ceremony. Overnight in a cave hotel — the experience of sleeping in a room carved from volcanic tuff, with windows overlooking the fairy chimneys, is worth the trip alone.
Day 2: Cappadocia — Balloons & Underground Cities
Sunrise balloon flight (optional, ~$280). Then: Derinkuyu Underground City (8 levels, 85m deep, sheltered 20,000 people), Love Valley hike, and Uçhisar Castle (a natural rock fortress with panoramic views). Overnight in cave hotel.
Day 3: Fly to Ephesus
Fly to Izmir. Full day at Ephesus: Library of Celsus, Great Theatre (where St. Paul preached), Terrace Houses (Roman frescoes and mosaics), and the House of the Virgin Mary (pilgrimage site recognized by the Vatican). Overnight in Kuşadası.
Day 4: Pamukkale — Cotton Castle
Drive to Pamukkale. Walk the white travertine terraces barefoot in warm mineral water. Swim in Cleopatra’s Pool among Roman columns. Hierapolis above: Roman theatre, necropolis, Plutonium. Return to Kuşadası. Farewell dinner.
Day 5: Departure
Transfer to Izmir Airport. Five days, three of Turkey’s greatest wonders, and the memory of hot air balloons floating over fairy chimneys at dawn.
