Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Hobart — Salamanca, MONA (subterranean art museum), kunanyi/Mt Wellington, Battery Point. Day 3: Bruny Island food trail — Australia’s best cheese (Bruny Island Cheese Co.), oysters (Get Shucked — the “nude” oysters, unadorned, taste like the Southern Ocean), berries, fudge, whisky (the southernmost whisky distillery in Australia, Sullivan’s Cove — winner of World’s Best Single Malt 2014). The Neck lookout (a narrow isthmus connecting North and South Bruny, with a stairway to a spectacular viewing platform — one of Tasmania’s best short walks). Day 4-5: West Coast — Strahan, Gordon River cruise (Huon pines 2,000+ years old, Sarah Island convict settlement), wilderness railway, Ocean Beach. Day 5-6: Cradle Mountain — Dove Lake circuit, wombats, Overland Track trailhead, Waldheim Chalet (Gustav Weindorfer’s 1912 forest home — the man who campaigned to create the national park). Day 7: Launceston & Tamar Valley wine route — Josef Chromy winery (one of Australia’s finest cool-climate producers, with a restaurant overlooking the vineyards), Cataract Gorge (a dramatic river gorge with a chairlift — the world’s longest single-span chairlift, 457m — right in the city). Day 8: Bay of Fires — the most beautiful coastline in Tasmania: granite boulders covered in orange lichen, white sand, impossibly blue water. The name is misleading — it’s not fire but the orange lichen on the granite boulders that creates the fiery effect. Walk to Sloop Reef at Binalong Bay. Day 9: Freycinet — Wineglass Bay, Hazards Beach. Day 10: Port Arthur Historic Site (UNESCO) and Tasman Peninsula natural wonders, then departure from Hobart.
