Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Kiritimati — The World’s Largest Coral Atoll
Arrive at Cassidy International Airport. Kiritimati (Christmas Island) covers 248 square miles — 70% land area of all Kiribati. Transfer to your fishing lodge. Welcome and briefing. Evening walk along the lagoon beaches. Overnight at fishing lodge.
Day 2: Bonefish Flats — World’s Best Bonefishing
Full-day guided bonefishing on Kiritimati’s legendary flats. The atoll is consistently ranked among the world’s top bonefish destinations — miles of hard white sand flats with huge numbers of bonefish averaging 4-6 lbs, with double-digit fish possible. Wade the flats with your guide stalking silver ghosts in inches of crystal-clear water. Non-fishers can explore the lagoon by kayak or snorkel the coral heads. Overnight at lodge.
Day 3: Giant Trevally & Offshore Fishing
Morning fishing for giant trevally (GT) in the lagoon channels — these apex predators strike with explosive power and fight with incredible strength. Afternoon: offshore fishing for yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi in the deep blue just beyond the reef. Your catch becomes dinner. Overnight at lodge.
Day 4: Bird Island — Seabird Spectacular
Visit Cook Island, a motu (small islet) in the lagoon that is one of the world’s most important seabird nesting sites. 18 species of seabirds nest here, including millions of sooty terns — the sky darkens when they take flight. See red-footed boobies, frigate birds, tropicbirds, and the rare Christmas Island warbler found nowhere else on Earth. Snorkeling in the lagoon. Overnight at lodge.
Day 5: Paris Point & Southeast Coast
Explore the remote southeast coast. Visit Paris Point, where the original French expedition observed a solar eclipse in the 1880s. Walk along beaches covered in pumice from distant volcanic eruptions, drifted here by Pacific currents. Visit old copra plantations and WWII Coast Watcher sites. Afternoon: lagoon fishing or beach time. Overnight at lodge.
Day 6: Nuclear Test Sites & Conservation Zone
Visit the former British nuclear test sites from the 1950s (Operation Grapple) — now reclaimed by nature. The irony of testing hydrogen bombs in paradise is not lost on visitors. Visit the Kiritimati Conservation Zone, where efforts are underway to protect the atoll’s unique ecosystems. Afternoon: final bonefishing session or snorkeling. Overnight at lodge.
Day 7: Village Life & Farewell
Visit the villages of London, Tabwakea, and Banana — each named by Father Emmanuel Rougier, who leased the atoll from the British in the early 1900s and planted 800,000 coconut trees. Meet local families, visit the handicraft center, and attend Sunday church service with beautiful Pacific harmonies. Farewell beach barbecue. Overnight at lodge.
Day 8: Depart Kiritimati
Morning lagoon swim. Transfer to airport.
