Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Socotra — Welcome to Another Planet
Arrive at Socotra Airport (flights from Abu Dhabi). The moment you step off the plane, you know you’re somewhere extraordinary. Socotra has been isolated for 18 million years — one-third of its plant species exist nowhere else on Earth. Transfer to your eco-camp near Hadiboh, the island’s capital. Welcome dinner of fresh-caught fish and Socotri flatbread. Overnight at eco-camp.
Day 2: Dragon’s Blood Trees — The Icon of Socotra
Full day exploring the Firhmin Forest (Dixam Plateau). Walk among Dragon’s Blood Trees (Dracaena cinnabari) — umbrella-shaped trees that look like flying saucers on stalks, bleeding crimson sap that has been used for medicine, dye, and varnish since ancient times. The Dixam Plateau at 700m elevation offers sweeping views over deep canyons. Visit the Shebahon viewpoint, where vultures and Egyptian eagles soar on thermals rising from the canyon. Afternoon: swim in the natural pool at Wadi Dirhur canyon. Overnight at eco-camp.
Day 3: Detwah Lagoon & Qalansiyah Beach
Drive to the western tip of the island. Detwah Lagoon is a UNESCO-protected area and one of the most beautiful spots on Earth — a turquoise lagoon separated from the Indian Ocean by a perfect crescent of white sand. Wade through the lagoon to spot stingrays and eagle rays gliding through chest-deep water. Afternoon: continue to Qalansiyah Beach, consistently rated one of the world’s most beautiful beaches — miles of pristine white sand backed by dramatic limestone cliffs, with not a single resort in sight. This is the Maldives without the hotels. Overnight at beach camp near Detwah.
Day 4: Bottle Trees & Hoq Cave
Morning: drive through the limestone plateau to the Hoq Cave, one of the largest caves in the Middle East — 3km deep with massive stalactites and stalagmites. Walk through chambers decorated with calcite formations. Afternoon: visit the Bottle Tree (Adenium obesum socotranum) forest — swollen-trunk trees with pink flowers that look like something from a Dr. Seuss book. These bizarre succulents store water in their massive trunks and burst into bloom after rains. Overnight at eco-camp.
Day 5: Arher Beach — Sand Dunes Meet the Ocean
Full day at Arher Beach, where 100-meter white sand dunes spill directly into the turquoise Indian Ocean — one of the world’s most surreal landscapes. Climb the massive dune for panoramic views, then run down into the sea. Freshwater stream meets salt water at the beach. Afternoon: explore the nearby cliffs and caves. Beach barbecue with freshly caught lobster and fish. Overnight at Arher camp.
Day 6: Homhil Protected Area — Infinity Pool with a View
Trek through the Homhil Protected Area. Walk among cucumber trees (Dendrosicyos socotrana) — the only tree species in the cucumber family, with bottle-shaped trunks and cucumber-like fruits. The trail ends at a natural infinity pool on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, with views stretching to the horizon. Swim in this incredible natural pool. Afternoon: visit traditional Socotri villages to see how islanders live — fishing, goat herding, and date palm cultivation. Overnight at eco-camp.
Day 7: Socotri Culture & Frankincense Trail
Visit the Socotra Folk Museum in Hadiboh. Walk through the frankincense groves — Socotra produces some of the world’s finest frankincense, harvested from Boswellia trees by making careful incisions in the bark. Visit a frankincense harvesting family to see the ancient process. Afternoon: Hadiboh market — dates, frankincense, Socotri honey (among the world’s most expensive), and handicrafts. Farewell feast of Socotri specialties. Overnight at eco-camp.
Day 8: Depart Socotra
Morning at leisure at Delisha Beach near the airport. Transfer for your flight back to Abu Dhabi.
