Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Istanbul

Arrive Istanbul. Afternoon: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome. Evening: Bosphorus dinner cruise. Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 2: Gallipoli — The Anzac Legacy

Drive to Gallipoli Peninsula (5 hours). The Gallipoli Campaign (1915) was one of WWI’s most tragic chapters — an 8-month Allied campaign to capture the Dardanelles that cost 130,000 lives (44,000 Allied, 86,000 Ottoman). Visit Anzac Cove (where Australian and New Zealand troops landed on 25 April 1915), Lone Pine Cemetery and Memorial, Chunuk Bair (New Zealand Memorial), and the Çanakkale Martyrs’ Memorial. The site is profoundly moving — the memorials, the preserved trenches (some only 8m apart), and Atatürk’s famous words to the mothers of the fallen: “You, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace.” Cross the Dardanelles by ferry. Overnight in Çanakkale.

Day 3: Troy & Pergamon — From Homer’s Epic to the Great Altar

Morning: Troy (UNESCO). The city of the Iliad — nine layers of settlement spanning 4,000 years (3000 BC — 500 AD). The famous Trojan Horse (a modern reconstruction at the site entrance — you can climb inside), the walls that held off the Greeks for 10 years, and the ramp where Hector and Achilles supposedly fought. Troy is more archaeology than spectacle — but the weight of the mythology (the face that launched a thousand ships) fills every stone. Afternoon: drive to Bergama. Pergamon (UNESCO) — the Acropolis on a 275m hill, with the steepest theatre in the ancient world (10,000 seats, 80 rows, 80° incline — the architects used the natural slope so dramatically that the theatre seems to fall into the valley). The Temple of Trajan, the Library (200,000 scrolls — second only to Alexandria, which is why Egypt embargoed papyrus exports to Pergamon, leading to the invention of pergamena — parchment — giving Pergamon its enduring legacy in the name), and the Altar of Zeus (its friezes now in Berlin’s Pergamon Museum). The view from the Acropolis over the Bakırçay Plain is one of the finest in Turkey. Overnight in Kuşadası.

Day 4-5: Ephesus & Pamukkale

The highlights as described in other tours: the world’s best-preserved Greco-Roman city, and the Cotton Castle travertines.

Day 6: Aphrodisias — The City of Sculptors & Antalya

Morning: Aphrodisias (UNESCO) — a remarkably preserved Greco-Roman city dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Aphrodisias was the sculptural capital of the Roman Empire — its marble quarries produced statues exported across the empire, and the site’s museum contains the finest collection of Roman sculpture in Turkey. The Tetrapylon (monumental gateway with four rows of four columns), the Sebasteion (a temple complex with 190 relief panels depicting imperial mythology), and the stadium (30,000 capacity, the best-preserved ancient stadium anywhere — 270m long, still fully intact). Afternoon: drive to Antalya through the Taurus Mountains. Arrive by evening. Overnight in Antalya.

Day 7: Antalya — Turquoise Coast Finale

Full day Antalya: Kaleiçi Old Town, Hadrian’s Gate, Düden Waterfalls, Konyaaltı Beach. Optional boat trip along the coast. Farewell dinner in Antalya’s old harbor. Overnight in Antalya.

Day 8: Departure

Transfer to Antalya Airport. Eight days along Turkey’s Aegean coast — from the Trojan War to the Roman Empire to the turquoise Mediterranean — is a journey through the entire arc of Western civilization.
