Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Bishkek — Ala-Too Square
Arrive in Bishkek. Your guide meets you at Manas Airport. Transfer to your hotel, then an orientation walk through the capital. Ala-Too Square, the central plaza, features the Manas monument and the changing of the guard. Oak Park offers Soviet-era sculptures. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant.
Day 2: Burana Tower to Tamga
Visit the 11th-century Burana Tower with its field of stone warriors (balbals). Then drive into the mountains toward Issyk-Kul’s southern shore. Arrive in Tamga, a quiet lakeside village with a sandy beach. Afternoon swim in Issyk-Kul — the water is slightly saline and incredibly clear. Overnight in Tamga guesthouse.
Day 3: Barskoon Gorge — Waterfalls & Yurts
Drive into the dramatic Barskoon Gorge, one of the Tian Shan’s most beautiful valleys. Hike to two waterfalls: the Tears of the Snow Leopard and the Manas Bowl. The trail passes through juniper forests with views of 4,500m peaks. Visit a yurt camp for lunch with a nomadic family — try fresh kumis (fermented mare’s milk) and home-baked bread. Afternoon return to Tamga for another swim.
Day 4: Skazka Canyon & Kochkor
Visit Skazka (“Fairy Tale”) Canyon with its surreal red rock formations. Then to Kochkor village. Afternoon: participate in the making of shyrdak — traditional Kyrgyz felt carpets. Learn how wool is beaten, dyed, and pressed into intricate geometric patterns. Overnight in a family-run guesthouse with home-cooked dinner.
Day 5: Son-Kul Lake — Nomadic Camp
Drive to Son-Kul Lake (3,016m), crossing the Moldo-Ashuu Pass (3,400m). Arrive at your yurt camp on the vast alpine plateau. This is true nomadic Kyrgyzstan: herders with their flocks, horses grazing, and the pristine lake reflecting the sky. Afternoon horseback ride to a viewpoint. Evening around the fire with your hosts. Sleep in a traditional yurt.
Day 6: Son-Kul to Karakol — Eagle Hunters
Morning at Son-Kul — wake to the sound of horses and the smell of fresh bread baking in a dung-fire oven. Drive to Bokonbayevo village on Issyk-Kul’s southern shore. Meet an eagle hunter (berkutchi) and watch a demonstration of this ancient hunting tradition. Continue to Karakol for the night.
Day 7: Karakol — Dungan & Russian Heritage
Explore Karakol: the wooden Orthodox Cathedral, the unique Chinese-style Dungan Mosque, and the lively livestock market (if it’s Sunday). Afternoon excursion to Jeti-Oguz gorge with its iconic red rock formations. Option to hike to the Valley of Flowers. Return to Karakol for dinner — try ashlyamfu, the local cold noodle dish.
Day 8: Cholpon-Ata to Bishkek
Drive along Issyk-Kul’s northern shore. Visit the Cholpon-Ata petroglyph site — over 2,000 rock carvings dating from 800 BC. Continue to Bishkek via the Boom Gorge. Farewell dinner at a top restaurant. Overnight in Bishkek.
Day 9: Bishkek & Departure
Morning at Osh Bazaar — the largest market in Central Asia outside of Tashkent. Buy Kyrgyz honey, dried fruits, felt products, and kalpak hats. Transfer to the airport. You leave with incredible memories of the Tian Shan, nomad hospitality, and the warm heart of Central Asia.
