Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Bishkek — Capital of the Nomads

Arrive in Bishkek. Afternoon walking tour: Ala-Too Square, the White House (Presidential Palace), the State Historical Museum, and Oak Park with its outdoor sculpture gallery. Welcome dinner featuring Kyrgyz national cuisine — beshbarmak, kumis (fermented mare’s milk), and boorsok (fried dough). Overnight in Bishkek.

Day 2: Burana Tower to Issyk-Kul

Drive to the Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret and one of Central Asia’s most important Silk Road monuments. Climb the tower for panoramic views over the Chuy Valley and the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountains. See the field of balbals — ancient stone warriors. Continue to Issyk-Kul Lake, stopping at Cholpon-Ata’s petroglyph site. Late afternoon arrival at your lakeside accommodation. Swim in the world’s second-largest alpine lake.

Day 3: Karakol & Jeti-Oguz — Red Rocks of the Tian Shan

Drive along Issyk-Kul’s scenic southern shore to Karakol. Visit the unique Dungan Mosque — a Chinese-style wooden mosque built without nails. See the Orthodox Church. Afternoon excursion to Jeti-Oguz (“Seven Bulls”), a dramatic red sandstone formation. Hike to the “Broken Heart” viewpoint. Continue to Jeti-Oguz sanatorium, a relic of the Soviet era where you can optionally try Soviet-style mineral water treatments.

Day 4: Skazka Canyon to Kochkor — Fairy Tale Lands

Visit Skazka (“Fairy Tale”) Canyon, an otherworldly landscape of red, orange, and yellow rock formations sculpted by millennia of erosion. Then to Kochkor village, the heart of Kyrgyz felt-making tradition. Participate in a shyrdak workshop — learn how Kyrgyz women create intricate felt carpets using ancient techniques. Overnight in a Kochkor guesthouse with home-cooked dinner.

Day 5: Son-Kul Lake — Nomadic Life at 3,000m

The highlight of your journey. Drive the dramatic mountain road (open June-September) to Son-Kul Lake at 3,016m. This vast alpine lake on a treeless plateau is summer pasture for nomadic herders. Arrive at your yurt camp. Spend the afternoon experiencing nomadic life: watch mares being milked for kumis, help herd sheep, ride a Kyrgyz horse across the plateau. Evening around the fire with your host family, listening to traditional komuz music under the brightest stars you’ve ever seen. Sleep in a felt yurt — warm, comfortable, and utterly magical.

Day 6: Son-Kul to Naryn — High Plateau Landscapes

Morning at Son-Kul: optional sunrise horseback ride to a viewpoint overlooking the lake. Farewell to your nomad hosts. Drive south across the high plateau to Naryn, a regional center set in a dramatic gorge. Visit the Naryn River valley and the Tash-Rabat area (optional extension). Evening walk through Naryn’s quiet streets. Overnight in a local hotel.

Day 7: Return to Bishkek

Drive back to Bishkek through the spectacular Central Tian Shan, crossing the Too-Ashuu Pass (3,586m) with its stunning mountain views and 3km tunnel. Stop at the Osh Bazaar for last-minute souvenirs — Kyrgyz honey, dried apricots, felt products, and the iconic white kalpak hat. Transfer to the airport. You leave with the scent of sagebrush steppe, the taste of kumis, and the warmth of Kyrgyz hospitality.
