Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Bishkek — Arrival in the Kyrgyz Capital

Arrive in Bishkek and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation walk through Ala-Too Square, the central plaza with its changing of the guard ceremony at the State Historical Museum. See the Manas statue — the legendary hero of the Kyrgyz epic poem, one of the world’s longest. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant featuring lagman (hand-pulled noodles), manty (steamed dumplings), and shashlik.

Day 2: Ala-Archa National Park — Alpine Meadows

Drive 40km south of Bishkek to Ala-Archa National Park, a stunning alpine valley in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range. Hike through juniper forests and alpine meadows with views of snow-capped peaks over 4,800m. The trail follows the Ala-Archa River through a gorge of dramatic rock formations. Picnic lunch in the mountains. Return to Bishkek for the evening.

Day 3: Burana Tower & Chon-Kemin — Silk Road Legacy

Drive east to the Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret and one of the last standing remnants of the ancient Silk Road city of Balasagun. Climb the 25m tower for views over the Chuy Valley. See the field of balbals — ancient Turkic stone grave markers. Continue to Chon-Kemin National Park, a beautiful valley between mountain ranges. Afternoon hike through the valley with its traditional villages and yurt camps.

Day 4: Issyk-Kul Lake — The Pearl of Central Asia

Drive to Issyk-Kul, the world’s second-largest alpine lake (after Titicaca). The name means “warm lake” — it never freezes despite being at 1,600m. Stop at Cholpon-Ata to see ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings dating from 800 BC to 300 AD) at the open-air museum. Afternoon at leisure on Issyk-Kul’s sandy beach — a surreal experience: swimming in a mountain lake surrounded by 4,000m peaks. Overnight in a lakeside hotel.

Day 5: Karakol — Dungan Culture & Orthodox Faith

Drive along Issyk-Kul’s southern shore to Karakol. Visit the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, a wooden church built in 1895 without a single nail. Then to the Dungan Mosque, a unique Chinese-style wooden mosque built by the Dungan (Chinese Muslim) community who fled China in the 19th century. Afternoon walk through Karakol’s Russian colonial streets and the lively livestock market (Sunday).

Day 6: Altyn Arashan — Golden Hot Springs

Excursion into the Altyn Arashan valley (“Golden Spa” in Kyrgyz). A 4×4 vehicle takes you up a dramatic mountain track to this alpine valley at 2,600m. Soak in natural hot springs (36-41°C) surrounded by pine forests and 4,000m peaks. Hike to a viewpoint over the valley or simply relax in this pristine setting. Return to Karakol for the night.

Day 7: Jeti-Oguz & Skazka Canyon — Red Rocks & Fairy Tales

Visit Jeti-Oguz (“Seven Bulls”), a spectacular red sandstone rock formation that’s one of Kyrgyzstan’s most photographed sights. Hike to the “Broken Heart” rock and through the Valley of Flowers (in season). Continue to Skazka Canyon (“Fairy Tale Canyon”), where wind and water have sculpted the red clay into fantastical shapes resembling castles, animals, and mythical creatures. Drive to Kochkor village for the night.

Day 8: Kochkor to Bishkek — Felt Making & Nomadic Crafts

Morning in Kochkor: visit a women’s cooperative to learn about traditional shyrdak (felt carpet) making. Try your hand at the ancient art of felt-making with local craftswomen. Visit the local market for Kyrgyz handicrafts. Afternoon drive back to Bishkek via the spectacular Boom Gorge. Farewell dinner at a top Bishkek restaurant — try beshbarmak, the national dish of boiled meat and noodles.

Day 9: Bishkek & Departure

Morning visit to Osh Bazaar — a sensory overload of spices, dried fruits, nuts, and everything from Soviet memorabilia to traditional Kyrgyz hats (kalpak). Last-minute souvenir shopping. Transfer to Manas International Airport. You leave with memories of alpine lakes, red rock canyons, nomadic hospitality, and the raw beauty of the Tian Shan.
