Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Beijing to Pyongyang

Fly from Beijing to Pyongyang on Air Koryo, the world’s only 1-star airline. The 2-hour flight is an experience in itself: cabin crew in sharp uniforms, inflight magazines of leader portraits, and a burger that defies categorization. Arrive at Pyongyang’s nearly empty international airport. Evening: stroll the bank of the Taedong River with city lights reflecting off the calm water — a surprisingly peaceful introduction. Overnight at Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 2: Pyongyang Monuments & Mansudae

Visit Mansudae Grand Monument for the mandatory bow to the Great Leaders. Explore the Grand People’s Study House, Kim Il Sung Square, and the Foreign Languages Bookshop. Ride the Pyongyang Metro (110m underground). Afternoon: the Juche Tower for city views, the Arch of Triumph, and the Monument to Party Foundation (the hammer, sickle, and calligraphy brush). Evening: a performance at the Mangyongdae Children’s Palace — hundreds of children demonstrating gymnastics, music, and dance with a precision that is both impressive and unsettling. Overnight at Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 3: Kaesong & DMZ — The Korean Border

Drive 2.5 hours south on the Reunification Highway to Kaesong, a historic city near the DMZ that largely escaped bombing during the Korean War. Visit the DMZ at Panmunjom — the cluster of blue UN buildings straddling the Military Demarcation Line, where the 1953 armistice was signed. Stand in the conference room where you can technically cross into South Korea (the ROK soldiers on the other side watch silently). See the concrete demarcation line dividing two countries technically still at war. Lunch in Kaesong: pibimpap served in brass bowls (a local specialty). Visit the Koryo Museum in a 10th-century Confucian academy with perfectly preserved wooden buildings. Overnight at Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 4: Pyongyang Depth & Mangyongdae

Morning at Mangyongdae Native House, Kim Il Sung’s birthplace — a thatched farmhouse preserved amid manicured gardens, where the official narrative of his humble revolutionary origins is told with conviction. Visit the USS Pueblo, captured US Navy intelligence vessel now a floating museum. Afternoon: the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum with its dioramas, captured equipment, and the narrative of American aggression. Kwangbok Department Store for a glimpse of local commerce. Evening: farewell dinner at a Pyongyang barbecue restaurant. Overnight at Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 5: Pyongyang Morning & Fly to Beijing

Morning visit to the Pyongyang Film Studio — a Soviet-style studio with sets from various Korean films. Transfer to Pyongyang International Airport for the Air Koryo flight back to Beijing.
