Day 1: Arrive Port Vila — Vanuatu’s Capital
Welcome at Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila, the charming capital of Vanuatu on Efate Island. Transfer to your resort. Afternoon: orientation walk along the waterfront — Port Vila’s French-influenced cafes, the bustling Mama’s Market, and the beautiful Mele Bay. Visit the Vanuatu National Museum — its collection of slit drums, outrigger canoes, and sand drawings (a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) provides the perfect introduction. Welcome dinner of French-Pacific fusion cuisine — Vanuatu’s dual colonial heritage means excellent food. Overnight in Port Vila. (D)
Day 2: Port Vila → Tanna Island — The Land of Volcanoes
Morning flight south to Tanna Island (45 minutes). The approach gives your first glimpse of Mount Yasur smoking on the horizon. Transfer to Whitegrass Ocean Resort. Afternoon: visit the Yakel kastom village — one of the most traditional communities in Vanuatu. Yakel’s residents maintain centuries-old customs: traditional grass skirts, face paint, and kastom dances. This village was the setting for the Oscar-nominated film “Tanna” (2015), and you’ll likely meet some of the villagers who starred in it. Watch a traditional dance performance and visit a nearby waterfall. Overnight at Whitegrass Ocean Resort. (B)
Day 3: Mount Yasur — The World’s Most Accessible Active Volcano
A day of volcanic wonder. Morning: visit Ipikel village to learn about the John Frum cargo cult — a fascinating religious movement that emerged after WWII, where villagers worship a mysterious American figure and await the return of cargo. Visit a black-sand beach and hot springs. Afternoon: the main event. Drive across the ash plains of Tanna to the base of Mount Yasur, then ascend by 4WD to the crater rim. The volcano has been erupting continuously for at least 800 years. Stand at the edge and watch — the ground rumbles, the crater booms, and glowing lava bombs arc into the twilight sky. As darkness falls, the eruptions become a natural fireworks display — crimson, orange, and gold against the stars. This is one of the most primal and awe-inspiring experiences on Earth. Day 4: Tanna → Port Vila → Pentecost Island
Morning flight to Port Vila, then a charter flight to Pentecost Island — the spiritual home of Naghol (land diving). Arrive at Lonorore Airport and transfer by truck to a traditional village in the south of the island. Welcome ceremony by the village chief. Settle into your guesthouse — simple but authentic, giving you a real window into village life. Afternoon: orientation and introduction to the Naghol tradition. Learn how the towers are built from jungle materials — no nails, no modern tools, just vines, poles, and generations of knowledge. Visit the site where tomorrow’s jumping will take place. Evening: kava ceremony — the mildly narcotic root drink that is central to ni-Vanuatu social life. Overnight in Pentecost village guesthouse. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Naghol Land Diving Ceremony
The day you came for. From early morning, the entire village gathers at the Naghol ground as the jumpers prepare — fasting, painting their bodies with traditional designs, and psyching themselves up. The tower stands up to 30 meters high, built from lashed poles and vines. The first jumper — always a married, experienced man — climbs to the highest platform. After a speech and a ritual, he leaps. The vines catch, his shoulders brush the ground (the perfect landing), and the crowd erupts. More jumpers follow from progressively lower platforms, some as young as 10. Each jump is a prayer for a good yam harvest, a test of courage, and a spectacular display of one of the world’s most dangerous traditions. This is where bungee jumping was born — and the original is far more raw and powerful. Afternoon: village celebration with traditional dancing, music, and a shared feast. Day 6: Pentecost → Port Vila & Departure
Morning farewell to your hosts. Charter flight back to Port Vila. Time permitting: visit the Rarru Cascades — a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole 20 minutes from town. Transfer to Bauerfield Airport for your onward flight. You leave Vanuatu with the roar of Yasur still in your ears and the image of Naghol jumpers etched in your memory. (B)
