Belize Family Journey: 8-Day Rainforest, Reef & Ancient Caves

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Belize City — Family Welcome

Airport meet-and-greet by your National Geographic Family Journeys guide. Transfer to your first lodge near the Maya Mountains. Welcome dinner and family orientation — your guide explains the week’s adventures and answers questions. Overnight near Belmopan. (D)

Day 2: Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary — Jaguar Country

Full day at Cockscomb Basin, the world’s first jaguar reserve. Established in 1984, this 150-square-mile sanctuary protects Central America’s highest concentration of jaguars alongside tapirs, ocelots, and over 300 bird species. Family-friendly hike to Ben’s Bluff waterfall for a refreshing swim in the natural pool. Visit the visitor center to learn about jaguar tracking and conservation. Kids love the touch-and-feel exhibits, and the guides are brilliant at engaging young minds with animal tracking skills. Afternoon: tubing down the South Stann Creek River. Overnight near Belmopan. (B, L)

Day 3: Nohoch Che’en Caves & Inland Blue Hole

Morning adventure at Nohoch Che’en Archaeological Reserve — float through ancient Maya cave systems on inner tubes, headlamps illuminating crystalline formations overhead. The cave river winds through chambers where the Maya once performed ceremonies. After lunch, visit the Inland Blue Hole — a cenote-like swimming hole in St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park, with crystal-clear sapphire water surrounded by jungle. Afternoon transfer to San Ignacio. Overnight in San Ignacio. (B, L)

Day 4: Xunantunich Maya Ruins & San Antonio Women’s Cooperative

Hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River — always a hit with kids — to Xunantunich. A National Geographic-trained guide brings the Maya world alive with stories of kings, astronomers, and ball games. Climb El Castillo and spot howler monkeys in the canopy. Afternoon: hands-on pottery workshop at the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative. Every family member makes their own Maya-style pot to take home. Evening: local family dinner — eat with a Belizean family in their home. Overnight in San Ignacio. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Belize Zoo → Placencia Beach

Morning at the Belize Zoo — widely considered one of the best small zoos in the world. All 175 animals are native rehabilitated wildlife. Feed a tapir, watch the harpy eagle demonstration, and learn about Belize’s incredible biodiversity from passionate keepers. Afternoon drive to Placencia, a 16-mile peninsula with some of Belize’s best beaches. Check into your beachfront resort. Evening: walk the famous Placencia Sidewalk — the narrowest main street in the world according to locals. Overnight in Placencia. (B)

Day 6: Placencia Beach Day & Snorkeling

Full day of sun, sand, and sea. Morning snorkeling trip to Laughing Bird Caye National Park — a tiny island on the barrier reef with some of Belize’s most pristine coral. Named for the laughing gulls that nest here, this protected area offers family-friendly snorkeling in clear, shallow water. Afternoon: beach time in Placencia — kayaking, paddleboarding, sandcastle building, or just swinging in a hammock reading a book. Optional: sunset catamaran cruise. Overnight in Placencia. (B, L)

Day 7: Placencia → Caye Caulker Finale

Transfer north to Belize City, then water taxi to Caye Caulker for the grand finale. Orientation walk on the car-free island. Afternoon snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley — the unforgettable experience of swimming alongside nurse sharks and stingrays. Evening: farewell dinner at a beachfront restaurant, watching the sun sink into the Caribbean. Overnight on Caye Caulker. (B)

Day 8: Departure

Final morning on Caye Caulker — a last swim, a last coconut water, a last photo at the “Go Slow” sign. Water taxi to Belize City, transfer to the international airport. Your family leaves Belize with an appreciation for Maya civilization, Caribbean reef ecology, and the warmth of Belizean culture. (B)
