Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Belize City → San Ignacio
Welcome at Philip Goldson International Airport. Transfer 2 hours west through the Maya Mountains to San Ignacio, the eco-adventure capital. Check into your jungle lodge. Evening: orientation walk along the Macal River at sunset, then a welcome dinner at a local restaurant serving hearty Belizean cuisine — stewed chicken, beans, and plantains. Overnight in San Ignacio. (D)
Day 2: Xunantunich Maya Ruins & Cahal Pech
Cross the Mopan River by hand-cranked ferry — a uniquely Belizean experience — to reach Xunantunich. The site’s centerpiece, El Castillo, rises 40 meters above the plaza with intricate stucco friezes depicting Maya cosmology. Climb to the summit for views of Guatemala’s Peten rainforest. Learn about the Maya ball game, astronomical observations, and the city’s mysterious collapse around 900 AD. Afternoon: explore Cahal Pech, a smaller but atmospheric hilltop site where Maya royalty lived. The on-site museum displays jade artifacts, obsidian blades, and polychrome pottery found during excavations. Evening: San Ignacio Market — sample fresh tropical fruit and watch local life unfold. Day 3: Barton Creek Cave Canoe → Belize City
Morning drive into the Mountain Pine Ridge to Barton Creek Cave. Board a canoe and paddle into the darkness — your headlamp illuminates a vast subterranean river system where the Maya performed rituals over a thousand years ago. Stalactites hang like chandeliers from the cathedral ceiling; pottery fragments sit on high ledges exactly where they were placed. It’s peaceful, eerie, and utterly magnificent. After emerging back into daylight, transfer to Belize City. Water taxi to Caye Caulker. Overnight on Caye Caulker. (B)
Day 4: Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley
The grand finale. Morning boat ride to Hol Chan Marine Reserve — the “Little Channel” cut through the barrier reef. Don your mask and fins, and enter another world: sea turtles gliding through coral gardens, spotted eagle rays soaring over the reef, schools of blue tang and angelfish parting around you. Then the unforgettable Shark Ray Alley — waist-deep water where southern stingrays brush against your legs and nurse sharks swim calmly past. Afternoon free to explore Caye Caulker’s sandy streets by bicycle or golf cart. Sunset farewell at The Split with a rum punch — you’ve earned it. Overnight on Caye Caulker. (B)
Day 5: Departure
One last morning in paradise. Water taxi to Belize City, transfer to the international airport. You’ve seen Belize’s holy trinity — Maya ruins, cave canoe, and barrier reef — in just five extraordinary days. (B)
