Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Port Vila, Efate
Airport transfer. Afternoon: Port Vila market, National Museum, waterfront promenade. Welcome dinner with Pacific seafood. Overnight in Port Vila.
Day 2: Efate Island Tour
Full-day island tour: Mele Cascades (climb through waterfalls to a jungle pool), Hideaway Island Marine Sanctuary (snorkeling over coral, underwater post office — send a waterproof postcard!), and the village of Eton for traditional kastom dance. Afternoon: visit the WWII American base relics and the Vanuatu Cultural Centre. Overnight in Port Vila.
Day 3: Fly to Tanna — Mount Yasur Volcano
Morning flight to Tanna (45 min). 4WD across the island to Yasur’s base. Afternoon and sunset at the crater rim — watch the world’s most accessible active volcano erupt with glowing lava bombs. Overnight at a lodge at Yasur’s foot.
Day 4: Tanna Culture & Return to Efate
Morning: kastom villages of Imao and Yakel (traditional lifestyle unchanged for centuries), Port Resolution beach (where Captain Cook landed in 1774), John Frum cargo cult village, and hot springs at Sulphur Bay. Evening flight to Port Vila.
Day 5: Fly to Espiritu Santo — Land of Blue Holes
Morning flight to Espiritu Santo (Luganville, 50 min) — Vanuatu’s largest island. Afternoon: visit Million Dollar Point — where the US military dumped jeeps, bulldozers, and equipment into the sea after WWII (now a fascinating snorkel/dive site). Continue to Champagne Beach — consistently rated one of the world’s most beautiful beaches: powder-white sand, impossibly turquoise water, and coconut palms bending toward the sea. Overnight in Luganville.
Day 6: Blue Holes & WWII Relics
Full day exploring Santo’s famous blue holes — crystal-clear freshwater swimming holes of the most intense blue imaginable, fed by underground springs filtered through limestone. Visit Matevulu Blue Hole, Riri Blue Hole (with rope swing!), and Nanda Blue Hole. Afternoon: WWII history tour — the SS President Coolidge wreck (the world’s largest accessible shipwreck, a luxury liner converted to troopship, sunk by mines in 1942), and the remains of the American base that housed 100,000 troops. Overnight in Luganville.
Day 7: Santo’s Wild North
Drive to Port Olry — a remote fishing village on Santo’s northern coast with a stunning lagoon. Snorkel over pristine coral gardens. Afternoon: visit a custom village for traditional kava ceremony (kava, made from the pepper plant root, is the Pacific’s traditional ceremonial drink, inducing relaxation). Evening flight to Port Vila. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Port Vila.
