Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Port Vila → Tanna Island
Arrive at Port Vila, then connect directly to a domestic flight to Tanna Island (45 minutes). Transfer to your lodge with views of Mount Yasur smoking in the distance. Afternoon: visit Yakel kastom village — experience traditional life unchanged for centuries, watch a kastom dance, and meet villagers who starred in the film “Tanna.” Overnight near Mount Yasur. (D)
Day 2: Mount Yasur — Day & Night at the Volcano
The ultimate volcano day. Morning: explore Tanna’s volcanic landscapes — ash plains, black-sand beaches, and boiling hot springs. Visit Ipikel village for a fascinating encounter with the John Frum cargo cult — villagers who revere an American WWII figure and await the return of cargo. Afternoon: ascend by 4WD across the ash plain to the crater rim of Mount Yasur. Spend the late afternoon watching eruptions grow in intensity as the sun sets. After dark, the full spectacle: roaring explosions, glowing lava bombs tracing fiery arcs across the sky, and the deep rumble of the Earth itself. Stay as long as the volcano permits — this is one of the world’s great experiences. Overnight near Mount Yasur. (B, L)
Day 3: Tanna → Port Vila
Morning at leisure — perhaps visit the Port Resolution bay where Captain Cook first landed on Tanna in 1774, or swim at a black-sand beach. Afternoon flight to Port Vila. Evening: farewell dinner at a Port Vila restaurant — French-Pacific cuisine to celebrate your volcanic adventure. Overnight in Port Vila. (B)
Day 4: Departure
Final morning in Vanuatu. Transfer to Bauerfield International Airport. The roar of Mount Yasur will stay with you long after you leave. (B)
