Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Port Vila, Vanuatu
Land at Bauerfield International Airport, Port Vila, on Efate Island. Vanuatu is an 83-island archipelago nation in the South Pacific, stretching 1,300km in a Y-shaped chain. Transfer to your hotel overlooking Vila Bay. Afternoon: orientation walk through Port Vila — the colorful produce market (a riot of tropical fruits, root vegetables, and fresh fish), the waterfront promenade, and the National Museum of Vanuatu (sandrwoing displays — traditional sand drawings recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage). Evening: welcome dinner at a restaurant on the Vila waterfront, sampling fresh Pacific lobster and organic Vanuatu beef. Overnight in Port Vila.
Day 2: Fly to Tanna — Land of the Volcano
Morning flight to Tanna Island (45 minutes) — a dramatic volcanic island in the southern Vanuatu chain. Tanna is home to Mount Yasur (361m), the world’s most accessible active volcano and one of the planet’s most continuously active volcanoes (erupting for over 800 years). Transfer by 4WD across the island — the journey takes you through lush tropical rainforest, past traditional villages where life continues according to kastom (traditional Melanesian law and culture), and across the ash plains at the volcano’s base. Check into your guesthouse at the foot of Yasur. Afternoon: your first visit to Yasur. Drive to the parking area and hike 10 minutes to the crater rim. Stand at the edge of an active volcano as it erupts — glowing lava bombs arc into the twilight sky, the ground shakes with each explosion, and the sound is like standing inside a jet engine. Stay until sunset, when the orange glow of the crater intensifies against the darkening sky. This is one of the planet’s most primal experiences. Overnight at Yasur View Lodge or similar on Tanna.
Day 3: Yasur Sunrise, Port Resolution & John Frum Village
Optional pre-dawn visit to Yasur for sunrise eruptions (a completely different color palette from sunset). Morning: drive to Port Resolution — a stunning natural harbor named by Captain James Cook in 1774 (the first European to visit Tanna, he named it after his ship). Cook was attracted to Tanna by the glow of Yasur on the horizon. Visit the white sand beach, swim in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy a fresh seafood barbecue lunch. Afternoon: visit the village of Sulphur Bay, home to the John Frum cargo cult — one of the world’s most fascinating religious movements. Followers of John Frum believe an American WWII serviceman will return with cargo (material goods) and have built ritual structures, march with bamboo “rifles,” and raise US flags in his honor. If your visit falls on a Friday, witness the all-night singing and dancing ceremony. Visit the natural hot springs at the volcano’s base for a thermal bath. Evening: second visit to Yasur for night eruptions — the lava bombs are even more spectacular in full darkness. Overnight on Tanna.
Day 4: Tribal Villages, Kastom Dance & Return to Port Vila
Morning: visit the village of Imao for a traditional kastom dance performance. Dancers in grass skirts, body paint, and headdresses perform stories of ancestors, hunting, and spirits to the rhythm of tam-tam (slit drums) with Mount Yasur smoking in the background — a scene of extraordinary cultural and natural power. Visit the village of Yakel — one of Tanna’s last traditional kastom villages where people still live in thatched huts without electricity, wearing traditional nambas (penis sheaths) and grass skirts, maintaining a way of life largely unchanged for centuries. Afternoon: flight back to Port Vila. Evening at leisure. Overnight in Port Vila.
Day 5: Depart Port Vila
Morning: free time for last-minute souvenir shopping — Vanuatu handicrafts, kava (the traditional Pacific drink), and local vanilla. Optional: visit Mele Cascades — a stunning series of waterfalls cascading through tropical rainforest, where you can climb to the top pool for a swim with views over Vila Bay. Transfer to Bauerfield Airport for departure.
