Day 1: Addis Ababa to Awash National Park
Depart Addis in the morning, driving east along the Great Rift Valley. Stop at the stunning crater lakes of Debre Zeit (Bishoftu). Continue to Awash National Park, one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most beautiful reserves. Afternoon game drive: oryx, Soemmerring’s gazelle, kudu, warthogs, and over 450 bird species. Overnight at Awash Falls Lodge, overlooking the spectacular waterfall.
Day 2: Full Day Wildlife in Awash
Dawn game drive — the park’s acacia savannah and the dramatic Awash River Gorge come alive. Search for the park’s legendary lions (black-maned in this region), spotted hyenas, and leopards. Visit the hot springs at Filwoha and the stunning Awash Falls. Afternoon visit to the Karrayu pastoralist villages to learn about their traditional nomadic life. Sunset at the gorge — a photographer’s dream. Overnight at Awash Falls Lodge.
Day 3: Return to Addis Ababa
Morning nature walk with a birding guide — Awash is one of Africa’s premier birding destinations with species including the Abyssinian roller, carmine bee-eater, and northern carmine bee-eater. Drive back to Addis Ababa via the Rift Valley lakes. Transfer to airport or hotel.
