Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Oslo — Viking Capital

Arrive at Oslo Gardermoen Airport. Transfer to your centrally-located hotel. Afternoon orientation walk through Oslo’s compact city center: the Royal Palace, Karl Johans Gate (the main boulevard), the Norwegian Parliament, and the modern waterfront district of Aker Brygge with its restaurants and fjord views. Welcome dinner featuring Norwegian salmon and aquavit.

Day 2: Oslo — Vikings, Art & the Opera

Full day exploring Oslo’s cultural highlights. Morning visit to the Viking Ship Museum on the Bygdøy Peninsula to see the remarkably preserved 9th-century Oseberg and Gokstad ships. Continue to the Fram Museum, housing the strongest wooden ship ever built — the vessel that took Amundsen to the South Pole and Nansen towards the North Pole. Afternoon at the Oslo Opera House — walk on its sloping marble roof for panoramic harbor views. Evening at leisure in the Grünerløkka district with its trendy cafes and bars.

Day 3: Oslo — Vigeland Park & Arctic Preparations

Morning visit to Vigeland Sculpture Park, the world’s largest sculpture park by a single artist — over 200 bronze, granite, and cast iron sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, including the iconic “Angry Boy” and the Monolith. Afternoon free for last-minute Arctic gear shopping or optional visit to the Munch Museum to see “The Scream.” Evening preparation for tomorrow’s Arctic departure.

Day 4: Oslo to Longyearbyen — Into the Arctic

Morning flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen (approximately 3 hours). The descent into Longyearbyen Airport offers your first views of the Arctic wilderness — glaciers, mountains, and fjords. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation walk through this unique settlement at 78°N: the colorful Main Street, Svalbard Church (the world’s northernmost), and the ever-present “polar bear danger” signs. Welcome dinner with Arctic specialties.

Day 5: Longyearbyen — Dog Sledding & Northernmost Experiences

Morning visit to a husky kennel for an exciting dog sledding on wheels expedition through Advent Valley (during summer months). Meet the Alaskan huskies and learn about the culture of dog sledding in the Arctic. Afternoon visit to the Svalbard Museum — one of Norway’s finest — to learn about the archipelago’s 400-year history of whaling, mining, trapping, and exploration. Optional visit to Svalbard Church for a moment of Arctic tranquility.

Day 6: Pyramiden & Nordenskiöldbreen — Arctic Ghost Town

Full-day electric boat expedition to Pyramiden, the abandoned Soviet mining town. Cruise silently past the massive Nordenskiöldbreen glacier, watching for walrus, seals, and Arctic birds. Explore Pyramiden’s frozen-in-time streets: the world’s northernmost Lenin statue, the cultural palace with its grand piano, and the empty apartment blocks. Your guide shares stories of Soviet Arctic ambitions and the town’s sudden abandonment in 1998. Packed lunch with glacier views.

Day 7: Borebukta Wildlife Safari & Farewell

Speedboat expedition to Borebukta, a pristine bay where walrus colonies haul out on ice floes. The RIB boat allows access to areas larger vessels cannot reach. Cruise across Isfjorden, scanning for polar bears along the coastline and reindeer on the slopes. Afternoon free for last explorations: the Northern Lights Observatory (aurora exhibition), the North Pole Expedition Museum, or souvenir shopping. Farewell dinner at Huset, featuring Arctic cuisine in one of the world’s northernmost fine dining restaurants.

Day 8: Longyearbyen to Oslo — Departure

Morning at leisure in Longyearbyen. Last chance for Arctic souvenirs — Svalbard-branded gear, locally-made crafts, and books about polar exploration. Transfer to Longyearbyen Airport for the flight to Oslo. Connect to your international departure. Take home the unique contrast of sophisticated Oslo and the raw beauty of the High Arctic — two Norways in one extraordinary journey.
