Day 1: Arrival in Goma — Lake Kivu Welcome

Arrive at Goma International Airport. Transfer to your hotel on the shores of Lake Kivu. Afternoon walk through Goma: the central market buzzing with traders from across the Great Lakes region, the lava-covered streets, and the resilient spirit of this city. Welcome dinner at a lakeside restaurant watching fishing boats drift across the water at sunset.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking — Virunga National Park

The day begins before dawn. Transfer to Virunga National Park for the gorilla trekking briefing. Trek through bamboo and montane forest to find a habituated mountain gorilla family. The one hour with these gentle giants — a silverback, several females, playful juveniles — is one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on Earth. Return to Goma in the afternoon, your heart full.

Day 3: Idjwi Island — Lake Kivu’s Hidden Gem

Morning boat transfer to Idjwi Island, the world’s tenth-largest lake island, split between Lake Kivu’s Congolese shores. This remote island is home to a self-sufficient community of pineapple and coffee farmers. Spend the day exploring island life: visit a coffee cooperative, walk through pineapple plantations, meet local artisans, and swim in Lake Kivu’s crystal-clear waters. The island has no roads — just footpaths through lush, green hills. Picnic lunch on the lakeshore. Return to Goma in the evening.

Day 4: Nyiragongo Volcano — The Lava Lake

Morning at leisure in Goma for rest and preparation. Afternoon transfer to Kibati for the Nyiragongo ascent. The 5-6 hour climb through five vegetation zones brings you to the summit at 3,470m. As night falls, the world’s largest lava lake reveals itself — a bubbling, glowing cauldron that fills the 1.2km-wide crater. Sleep in the summit cabins, mesmerized by the ever-changing patterns of molten rock.

Day 5: Summit Sunrise & Lake Kivu Boat Safari

Dawn at the crater rim for the unforgettable sunrise over the Virunga volcanoes. After breakfast, descend to Kibati (3-4 hours). Return to Goma for lunch and a well-deserved rest. Late afternoon sunset cruise on Lake Kivu, with views of the volcanoes, fishing villages, and the border with Rwanda. Fresh fish dinner at the port.

Day 6: Tongo Chimpanzees & Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage

Morning visit to Tongo Forest for chimpanzee tracking on the slopes of Nyamulagira volcano. Observe wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat — feeding, grooming, and communicating. Afternoon visit to the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage, the world’s only facility caring for orphaned mountain gorillas. Learn about the threats facing these gorillas and the extraordinary efforts to protect them. This intimate experience with the orphan gorillas is deeply moving. Farewell dinner in Goma.

Day 7: Goma — Cultural Morning & Departure

Morning visit to a local artisan cooperative to see Congolese crafts — vibrant textiles, wood carvings, and paintings reflecting the region’s rich culture. Last stroll along Lake Kivu’s shores.
