Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Luanda to Lubango

Fly from Luanda to Lubango. Afternoon orientation in Angola’s second-largest city, nestled in the Huila highlands. Visit the Tundavala Fissures at sunset — an awe-inspiring 1,000-meter escarpment.

Day 2: Lubango — Mwila Tribal Country

Spend the day with the Mwila (Mumuila) people in their remote villages outside Lubango. These pastoralists live in traditional compounds and maintain customs centuries old. Learn about their cattle-based economy, matrilineal inheritance, and the elaborate hairstyling that serves as a marker of identity and status.

Day 3: Namibe — Serra da Leba & Prehistoric Rock Art

Descend the legendary Serra da Leba pass with its iconic hairpin turns. Stop at Virei to see prehistoric rock paintings. Continue to the desert city of Namibe (formerly Mocamedes), a Portuguese colonial gem on the Atlantic with distinctive Art Deco architecture. Visit the Namibe Museum.

Day 4: Espinheira — Into the Namibe Desert

Head into the heart of the Namibe Desert to Espinheira. Explore this remote outpost where the Namib Desert — the world’s oldest — stretches to the horizon. Discover ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis plants, remarkably adapted to survive on only coastal fog for over 1,500 years.

Day 5: Baia dos Tigres — The Ghost Island

Journey to the legendary Baia dos Tigres (Bay of Tigers) — once a thriving fishing settlement connected to the mainland, now a ghost town on an island cut off when the sea reclaimed the isthmus in the 1960s. The abandoned buildings, rusting shipwrecks, and pristine beaches create an eerie and beautiful landscape. This is one of Africa’s most remote and least visited destinations.

Day 6: Baia dos Tigres — Shipwrecks & Seal Colonies

Full day exploring Baia dos Tigres. Walk through the abandoned town — houses still furnished, a cinema with tattered velvet seats, a desalination plant frozen in time. Visit Cape Cross seal colony (Tigres variant). The coastline here is home to rich marine life including dolphins, whales (seasonal), and abundant seabirds.

Day 7: Oncocua — Himba & Mucawana Tribes

Drive through increasingly remote terrain to Oncocua in Cunene province, near the Namibian border. This region is the homeland of the Himba and Mucawana peoples — some of Africa’s last semi-nomadic pastoralists. Their distinctive red ochre body adornment (otjize) and intricate jewelry represent one of Africa’s most photographed cultures. Overnight in a wild camp.

Day 8: Ongongo Waterfalls & Desert Oases

Discover the hidden Ongongo Waterfall — a desert oasis where crystal-clear water cascades into a natural swimming pool surrounded by lush vegetation. A surreal contrast to the arid landscape. Continue through the Cunene River valley where traditional Himba settlements dot the landscape.

Day 9: Return to Lubango

Long but scenic drive back to Lubango through changing landscapes — from Cunene’s arid plains to Huila’s green highlands. Stop at rural markets and viewpoints. Farewell dinner in Lubango with traditional Angolan music.

Day 10: Departure

Transfer to Lubango airport for departure.
