Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Niamey — Niger’s Capital
Arrive at Niamey International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon exploration of Niger’s capital: the Grand Mosque, the National Museum’s excellent ethnographic collection, and the artisan market. Evening welcome dinner on the banks of the Niger River, watching the sunset over one of Africa’s great waterways. Safari briefing with your guide.
Day 2: Niamey to W National Park — Into the Wild
Morning drive south from Niamey through the Sahel landscape, transitioning from semi-arid savanna to the greener ecosystems of the Niger River basin. Arrive at W National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site named for the W-shaped meander of the Niger River that forms its northern border. The park spans three countries (Niger, Benin, and Burkina Faso) and protects one of West Africa’s most important wildlife habitats. Afternoon game drive in the park’s northern sector. Overnight at a park lodge.
Day 3: W National Park — Full Day Safari
Dawn game drive — the best time for wildlife viewing. W National Park is home to West Africa’s largest remaining populations of elephants, as well as lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, hippos, baboons, warthogs, and numerous antelope species including roan, western hartebeest, and topi. Over 350 bird species have been recorded. Morning focus on the park’s northern savanna and gallery forests along the Niger River tributaries. Afternoon game drive in a different sector, exploring varied habitats. Sundowner overlooking the African bush.
Day 4: W National Park — River & Wetlands
Morning boat safari on the Niger River and its tributaries — a different perspective on the park’s wildlife. Watch for hippos wallowing in the shallows, crocodiles sunning on sandbanks, and the remarkable diversity of birdlife: fish eagles, Goliath herons, saddle-billed storks, and bee-eaters. The riverine forest hosts monkeys and, with luck, leopards coming to drink. Afternoon guided nature walk with an armed ranger, learning about the smaller wonders of the African bush — tracks, insects, medicinal plants, and the interconnected web of savanna ecology.
Day 5: W National Park to Niamey — Last Safari
Final dawn game drive — the golden light of an African sunrise, the chance for last-minute wildlife encounters. Return to the lodge for breakfast, then begin the drive back to Niamey. Stop at traditional Zarma and Fulani villages along the route to learn about rural life in Niger. Arrive in Niamey by late afternoon. Farewell dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Niger River.
Day 6: Niamey — Departure
Morning visit to the artisan village for Tuareg silver, Fulani textiles, and leatherwork. Transfer to the airport for departure. Take home memories of West Africa’s premier wildlife reserve, where elephants still roam and the Niger River winds through one of the continent’s great ecosystems.
