Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in N’Djamena

Arrive in Chad’s capital. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation of N’Djamena: the Grand Mosque, the National Museum, and the central market. Expedition briefing with your guide and 4WD driver team. Welcome dinner.

Day 2: N’Djamena to Fada — Gateway to Ennedi

Morning flight from N’Djamena to Fada, the administrative center of the Ennedi region and your gateway to the massif. Fada sits at the edge of the plateau, surrounded by dramatic sandstone formations. Afternoon orientation walk through Fada: visit the market, meet your Tubu guides, and prepare vehicles for the desert expedition. Overnight at a local guesthouse.

Day 3: Fada to Aloba Arch — The World’s Largest Natural Arch

Depart Fada in 4WD vehicles into the heart of the Ennedi Massif. First stop: the Aloba Arch, one of the world’s largest natural arches at 120m high — taller than the Arc de Triomphe stacked on top of itself. The scale of this geological wonder is breathtaking. Continue through the massif’s labyrinth of sandstone formations, sculpted by millions of years of wind and water erosion into fantastic shapes — towers, pillars, and massive rock arches. Camp in the desert.

Day 4: Guelta d’Archeï — Desert Crocodiles

A highlight of any Ennedi expedition: the Guelta d’Archeï, a permanent waterhole in a narrow canyon surrounded by towering sandstone walls. Descend into the canyon to see one of the Sahara’s most extraordinary sights — a population of West African crocodiles (dwarf crocodiles) surviving in this isolated desert oasis, remnants from the Sahara’s wet period 10,000 years ago. Local Tubu guides share legends of the guelta. The canyon walls, stained black by millennia of camel caravans using this water source, create a dramatic natural amphitheater. Camp nearby.

Day 5: Terkei — The Sandstone Cathedral

Explore the Terkei region of the Ennedi, known locally as the “Sandstone Cathedral.” Massive rock pinnacles rise from the desert floor, sculpted into organ-pipe formations and towering spires. This is one of the world’s most spectacular rock-climbing destinations — the landscape resembles Utah’s Monument Valley but on a more dramatic scale. Day 6: Ennedi Rock Art — 8,000 Years of Human History

Full day dedicated to exploring the Ennedi’s extraordinary collection of rock art — one of the Sahara’s richest concentrations. Visit multiple sites featuring petroglyphs and paintings spanning 8,000 years: the “Large Wild Fauna” period with elephants, giraffes, and rhinoceros; the “Pastoral” period with cattle herders; and the “Camel” period marking the Sahara’s desertification. The most famous panels depict the “Niola Doa” — mysterious, ornate figures whose meaning remains debated by archaeologists. Camp in the massif.

Day 7: Eastern Ennedi — Tubu Culture

Explore the eastern reaches of the Ennedi Massif, less visited and more pristine. Meet Tubu nomadic families who maintain their traditional lifestyle in this harsh environment. Learn about Tubu culture — their incredible desert survival skills, camel herding traditions, and oral history. The Tubu are renowned as some of the Sahara’s toughest people, capable of navigating vast distances by memory of the stars and landscape features. Farewell camp in the Ennedi.

Day 8: Fada to N’Djamena — Return from the Desert

Morning drive back to Fada, crossing the Ennedi’s northern perimeter for final panoramic views of the massif. Afternoon flight from Fada to N’Djamena. Hot shower, comfortable bed, and a celebratory farewell dinner in the capital, sharing stories and photographs from the Sahara.

Day 9: N’Djamena — Departure

Morning visit to the N’Djamena artisan market for Tubu leather work, silver jewelry, and Sahara crafts. Transfer to the airport for departure. Take home the memory of the Sahara’s most spectacular rock formations, desert crocodiles, ancient rock art, and the warm hospitality of Chad’s desert peoples.
