Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Punta Arenas — Embarkation
Check in at Australis pier in Punta Arenas, Chile’s southernmost continental city. Board the expedition cruise ship in the afternoon and sail through the Strait of Magellan. Welcome dinner as you watch the Patagonian coastline fade into the distance. Evening briefing on the voyage ahead. Overnight sailing through the legendary fjords.
Day 2: Ainsworth Bay & Tuckers Islets
Dawn arrival at Ainsworth Bay in Alberto de Agostini National Park. Zodiac landing to explore the subpolar Magellanic forest and a beaver dam ecosystem. Watch for elephant seals along the shoreline. Continue to Tuckers Islets for close-up encounters with Magellanic penguins (over 4,000 breeding pairs) and cormorants. The ship sails through the Cockburn Channel into the remote Beagle Channel region.
Day 3: Pía Glacier & Glacier Alley
Morning zodiac excursion to the face of Pía Glacier, where massive ice walls calve into the fjord with thunderous crashes. Navigate through Glacier Alley (Avenida de los Glaciares) — a spectacular passage past five named glaciers: España, Romanche, Alemania, Francia, and Italia, each descending from the Darwin Mountain Range into the sea. Onboard naturalist talks about Patagonian glaciology and wildlife.
Day 4: Cape Horn & Wulaia Bay
Weather permitting, disembark at Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos) — the legendary “End of the Earth” where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. Climb the wooden boardwalk to the Cape Horn Monument, the lighthouse, and the small chapel. This is one of the world’s most fabled nautical landmarks, rounding the Drake Passage. Afternoon at Wulaia Bay, one of the largest Yamana indigenous archaeological sites, with time for hiking through the pristine Magellanic forest.
Day 5: Ushuaia — Disembarkation
Sail through the Beagle Channel as dawn breaks over the Martial Mountains. Disembark in Ushuaia, Argentina — the world’s southernmost city. Transfer to airport or hotel. Farewell to the wild fjords of Tierra del Fuego!
