Day 1: Arrive Victoria Falls
- Arrive VFA. Transfer to lodge. Afternoon Zambezi Sunset Cruise — 2 hours on the Zambezi River with wildlife on the banks (elephants, hippos, crocodiles), cold drinks, and an African sunset that sets the river ablaze in orange and gold
- Evening Boma Dinner & Drum Show — traditional Zimbabwean feast with game meats, interactive drumming, and storytelling
Overnight at Victoria Falls lodge.
Day 2: Victoria Falls Guided Tour
- Full morning exploring the 16 viewpoints along the Falls with expert guide — geology, history, and the best photo spots (see Tour 1, Day 2 for detailed description)
- Lunch at Lookout Cafe with views of the Batoka Gorge and Victoria Falls Bridge
- Afternoon: optional activities — helicopter flight over the Falls (12-15 minute “Flight of Angels,” ~$150, offering the only way to see the full 1.7 km width of the Falls in one view), bungee jumping from the bridge, or white-water rafting on the Zambezi (Grade V rapids through the Batoka Gorge, consistently ranked among the world’s best rafting)
Overnight at Victoria Falls lodge.
Day 3: Victoria Falls → Hwange National Park
- Morning drive to Hwange National Park (approximately 2 hours). Hwange — Zimbabwe’s largest national park at 14,650 sq km (roughly the size of Connecticut) — was established in 1928 and is one of Africa’s premier elephant sanctuaries. The park hosts an estimated 45,000+ elephants (a density that’s among the highest in Africa), along with 100+ mammal species and 400+ bird species
- En-route game drive to the lodge. Hwange’s landscape — Kalahari sands with teak and mopane woodlands, open grasslands, and seasonal pans — supports a remarkable diversity
- Afternoon game drive. Hwange is particularly famous for its painted dogs (African wild dogs) — one of Africa’s most successful populations, with several packs regularly sighted. The park also has strong populations of lion (the famous “Cecil’s pride” territory), leopard, cheetah, and an estimated 600+ species of trees and shrubs
Overnight at Hwange safari lodge.
Day 4: Hwange — Full Day Safari
- Dawn game drive — the golden hour in Hwange is magical, with elephants emerging from the mopane woodlands to drink at waterholes
- The park’s 60+ pumped waterholes (a legacy of colonial-era water management that now sustains the park’s massive wildlife populations) are the key to game viewing. In dry season, positioning at a waterhole can yield elephants by the hundreds — the sight of 200+ elephants converging on a single water source is one of Africa’s great wildlife spectacles
- Afternoon game drive in a different section of the park. The Ngweshla and Kennedy 1 pans in the park’s eastern sector are legendary for buffalo and elephant concentrations, while Mandavu Dam in the north offers excellent birdwatching and hippo viewing
- Sunset sundowner at a scenic viewpoint — the African ritual of gin & tonic at sunset, surrounded by wilderness
Overnight at Hwange safari lodge.
