Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Douala Arrival — Cameroon’s Economic Capital
Arrive at Douala International Airport. Afternoon exploration of Cameroon’s largest city: the Bonanjo administrative quarter with its colonial architecture, the Doual’art contemporary art center, and the bustling Marche des Fleurs. Welcome dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Wouri River.
Day 2: Douala to Bafoussam — Into the Grassfields
Drive northwest into Cameroon’s Grassfields region, known for its powerful traditional kingdoms. Stop at Bandjoun to visit the Chiefdom Palace, one of the most impressive traditional architectural complexes in West Africa. Continue to Bafoussam for overnight.
Day 3: Foumban — The Bamoun Sultanate
Full day in Foumban, the cultural heart of the Bamoun people. Visit the magnificent Sultan’s Palace and its museum housing centuries-old royal treasures, including the famous bronze Bamoun throne. Explore the artisan quarter where craftsmen work in copper, bronze, wood, and clay using techniques passed down for centuries. Visit the Bamoun Script and Archives Project.
Day 4: Dschang — Civilization Museum
Travel to Dschang, a pleasant hill town with cool mountain air. Visit the outstanding Museum of Civilizations, which traces Cameroon’s diverse ethnic groups and their histories. Afternoon walk through the town’s botanical gardens.
Day 5: Mount Cameroon Region — Buea
Drive to Buea, the historic capital of German Kamerun, nestled on the slopes of Mount Cameroon (4,095m) — West Africa’s highest peak. Visit the Bonanlyonga royal seat and the German colonial-era buildings, including the Bismarck Fountain. The volcanic landscape creates a dramatic backdrop.
Day 6: Buea to Limbe — Volcanic Beaches
Short drive to Limbe on the Atlantic coast. Visit the 1999 lava flow at Bakingili where Mount Cameroon’s eruption created surreal black rock formations. Explore the Limbe Botanic Garden, established in 1892 by German horticulturists, featuring rare tropical plants.
Day 7: Limbe Wildlife Centre & Beach Day
Morning at the Limbe Wildlife Centre — Cameroon’s premier primate rescue and rehabilitation facility, home to gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, and mandrills rescued from the bushmeat trade. Afternoon on Limbe’s distinctive black-sand volcanic beaches.
Day 8: Return to Douala
Coastal drive back to Douala. Afternoon free for last-minute exploration — visit the Artisanal Village for carvings, masks, and textiles.
