Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Bamako
Arrive and explore Bamako. National Museum, Grand Marché, sunset over the Niger River. Overnight in Bamako.
Day 2: Bamako to Ségou — River Road
Drive to Ségou, the former Bambara capital (3 hours). Explore the colonial town, visit pottery village of Kalabougou where women have thrown pots for centuries using techniques unchanged for millennia. Afternoon: pirogue ride on the Niger. Overnight in Ségou.
Day 3: Ségou to Djenné — The Mud Mosque
Continue to Djenné. Cross the Niger by ferry. Walk the old town, visit the Great Mosque, and explore the Monday market (if timed right). Overnight in Djenné.
Day 4-5: Dogon Country Trek
Two-day trek along the Bandiagara Escarpment. Visit cliff villages, Tellem burial caves, sacred sites. Dogon mask dance. Overnight in Dogon villages.
Day 6: Mopti — Venice of Mali
Travel to Mopti. Explore the busy river port where pirogues, pinasses (large cargo boats), and barges converge. Visit the fishermen’s quarter and the salt market — salt blocks from Taoudenni in the Sahara, transported by camel caravan. Sunset cruise on the Niger. Overnight in Mopti.
Day 7: Return to Bamako
Fly to Bamako. Afternoon: artisan market and farewell dinner with live Malian music. Overnight in Bamako.
Day 8: Depart Mali
Morning at leisure. Transfer to airport.
