Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Kyiv — Mother of Rus’ Cities

Arrive at Boryspil International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in central Kyiv. Afternoon orientation: walk along Khreshchatyk, Kyiv’s grand main boulevard, to Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) — the symbolic heart of modern Ukraine. Evening: Ukrainian dinner of borscht (beetroot soup with smetana), varenyky (pierogi), and Chicken Kyiv at a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Kyiv.

Day 2: Kyiv — Golden Domes & Ancient Hills

Full day in Kyiv. Morning: Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1051. Walk through the golden-domed complex and descend into the underground caves where mummified monks have rested for nearly 1,000 years. Afternoon: St. Sophia Cathedral with its original 11th-century mosaics and frescoes — including the incomparable Oranta, a 6-meter Virgin Mary mosaic in gold. Climb the Bell Tower for panoramic views of the Dnipro River. Walk down Andriyivskyy Descent, Kyiv’s Montmartre, lined with art galleries and artisan stalls. Overnight in Kyiv.

Day 3: Kyiv — WWII History & Modern Resilience

Morning: National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II with the towering Motherland Monument — a 62-meter titanium statue holding sword and shield. Afternoon: visit the Chernobyl Museum for a sobering look at the 1986 nuclear disaster. Evening: attend a performance at the National Opera of Ukraine — one of Europe’s finest opera houses with tickets at a fraction of Western prices. Overnight in Kyiv.

Day 4: Lviv — The Coffee Capital

Morning high-speed train to Lviv (5.5 hours, a scenic journey). Lviv is the cultural capital of western Ukraine and the most Central European of Ukrainian cities with its UNESCO-listed old town. Afternoon: walk through Rynok Square, the magnificent Renaissance market square at the heart of the city. Climb the Town Hall tower for views. Visit the Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture — yes, coffee “mined” underground in a whimsical café. Evening: Lviv’s legendary pub culture — visit Kryivka (hidden bunker bar) and Masoch Café (dedicated to Lviv native Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, who gave his name to masochism). Overnight in Lviv.

Day 5: Lviv — Churches, Cathedrals & Chocolate

Full day in Lviv. Morning: visit the Latin Cathedral, the Armenian Cathedral (one of Europe’s oldest Armenian churches), and the extraordinary Dominican Church. Visit the Lviv National Art Gallery. Afternoon: Lviv Chocolate Factory for handmade chocolates, then the Lvivarnya Beer Museum for a tour (Lviv has brewed beer since 1715). Visit the High Castle Park at sunset for panoramic views. Overnight in Lviv.

Day 6: Carpathian Mountains Day Trip

Day trip to the Carpathian Mountains (2 hours from Lviv). Visit the traditional Hutsul villages with their distinctive wooden churches (UNESCO-listed). Hike through alpine meadows with views stretching to the Romanian border. Traditional Carpathian lunch of banosh (cornmeal with cheese and sour cream) and mushroom soup. Visit a Hutsul artisan for traditional woodcarving and wool weaving. Return to Lviv. Overnight in Lviv.

Day 7: Odesa — Pearl of the Black Sea

Morning flight or train to Odesa. This cosmopolitan Black Sea port was founded by Catherine the Great and built by French and Italian architects. Walk the Primorsky Boulevard to the Potemkin Steps — 192 steps immortalized in Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin. Visit the Odesa Opera House, one of the most beautiful in the world. Afternoon: explore the Odesa Catacombs — 2,500km of underground tunnels used by WWII partisans. Farewell dinner at a Black Sea seafood restaurant. Overnight in Odesa.

Day 8: Depart Odesa

Morning at the Privoz Market — one of Europe’s largest fresh food markets and a quintessential Odesa experience. Transfer to airport.
