Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Guiyang

Welcome to Guizhou, one of China’s poorest provinces economically, but among the richest in cultural and natural wealth. Arrive in Guiyang, the provincial capital, and settle into your hotel. Evening walk through the Qianling Park, where wild macaques roam freely and the Hongfu Temple (1667) sits atop a forested hill. Guiyang’s food scene is legendary — try siwawa (vegetable wraps with sour soup dipping sauce), the city’s signature street food. Overnight in Guiyang.

Day 2: Huangguoshu Waterfall — Asia’s Greatest

Full-day excursion to Huangguoshu Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Asia. At 77.8 meters tall and 101 meters wide, its thunderous roar can be heard kilometers away. But what makes Huangguoshu unique is that you can walk behind the curtain of water — a natural cave passage (Shuiliandong, Water Curtain Cave) lets you view the cascade from inside, an experience that inspired the Monkey King’s home in “Journey to the West.” The waterfall cluster includes 18 separate falls in the area, and you’ll visit the most dramatic: Doupotang (the widest) and Luositan (the longest). Overnight in Anshun.

Day 3: Xijiang Thousand Miao Village

Drive to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, the largest Miao settlement in the world — over 1,400 households of stacked wooden houses (diaojiaolou) climbing both sides of a mountain valley. The Miao are one of China’s 56 ethnic groups, with their own language, silver-working tradition, and textile art. Walk the village lanes to watch women embroidering traditional jackets — a single garment can take a year to complete. Visit the Miao Silver Ornament Museum. At dusk, climb to the viewpoint as thousands of lights flicker on across the village, creating one of China’s most spectacular nightscapes. Dinner: suantang yu, the Miao sour fish soup cooked with wild tomatoes and mountain herbs — a dish so fundamental that a Miao proverb says “a meal without sour soup is no meal at all.” Overnight in Xijiang (guesthouse with valley view).

Day 4: Kaili & Gejia Batik Village

Morning departure from Xijiang. Stop at Leishan market (if it’s market day) where Miao women in full silver headdresses shop for embroidery thread and batik cloth. Visit a Gejia village — the Gejia are a distinct ethnic group often classified as a Miao subgroup, famous for their batik art. Watch a master demonstrate the painstaking process: drawing patterns with hot wax, dying indigo, boiling off the wax to reveal snowflake-white designs on deep blue cloth. Participate in a batik workshop and take home your creation. Afternoon: drive to Kaili for a walking tour of the Ethnic Minorities Museum. Overnight in Guiyang.

Day 5: Qingyan Ancient Town & Depart

Morning at Qingyan Ancient Town (1378), one of Guizhou’s best-preserved historic towns. The 600-year-old stone streets, city walls, and a surprising mix of Buddhist temples, Taoist shrines, Christian churches, and a Catholic cathedral in one small town reflect Guizhou’s historical role as a crossroads. Try the town’s famous braised pig’s feet and rose candy. Afternoon transfer to Guiyang airport.
