Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Guiyang
Arrive Guiyang. Evening food crawl through the Erqi Road night market: try changwang mian (intestine noodles), la su hu (crispy spicy), and huajiao ji (pepper chicken) — Guizhou cuisine runs on spice and sour. Overnight in Guiyang.
Day 2: Huangguoshu Waterfall & Anshun
Full day at Huangguoshu Waterfall — walk behind the thunderous 77.8m curtain via the Water Curtain Cave. Visit the Doupotang and Luositan falls. Afternoon: Anshun’s Confucian Temple (1368) with its extraordinary stone dragon columns — each dragon carved from a single block of stone. Overnight in Anshun.
Day 3: Dragon Palace & Getu River
Morning at the Dragon Palace (Longgong) — China’s longest underground river cave system, navigated by boat through illuminated caverns of stalactites and waterfalls inside the mountain. Afternoon: drive to the Getu River valley. The landscape here is pure Guizhou — vertical karst towers rising from rice paddies, wrapped in mist. Visit the Miao village of Zhongdong, the “Last Cave Village” where families lived in a natural cave shelter until 2010. Overnight in Ziyun.
Day 4: Xijiang Thousand Miao Village
Drive to Xijiang, the world’s largest Miao village (1,400+ wooden houses). Spend the day exploring lanes, watching silver artisans, and photographing the tiered village from multiple viewpoints. Evening: thousand lights over the valley. Overnight in Xijiang.
Day 5: Congjiang & Basha Miao
Drive through spectacular karst scenery to Congjiang County. Visit Basha Miao Village, where men wear their hair in traditional topknots and carry knives — the only village in China where residents are legally permitted to own firearms (muzzle-loading hunting rifles, a tradition dating back centuries). Watch a cultural performance including gun salutes and the unique Basha shaving ceremony — hair is cut with a sickle between the teeth. Overnight in Congjiang.
Day 6: Zhaoxing Dong Village & Drum Towers
Visit Zhaoxing, one of China’s most beautiful Dong minority villages, home to five stunning drum towers — each representing one of the village clans (benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom, trust). The Dong people are famous for their polyphonic choir singing (Grand Song of the Dong, UNESCO Intangible Heritage) — complex, multi-part harmonies passed down orally for millennia without musical notation. Watch a performance in a drum tower square. Afternoon: walk the 3km cobblestone path to Tang’an, an even smaller Dong village perched on a hilltop with terraced rice paddies spilling down to Zhaoxing — one of the most beautiful village walks in China. Overnight in Zhaoxing.
Day 7: Guiyang & Depart
Comfortable drive back to Guiyang (morning). Visit the Guizhou Provincial Museum en route. Afternoon transfer to airport.
