Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Kashgar — Old Town Discovery
Welcome to Kashgar, the westernmost city of China — 1,500km from Beijing and only 28km from the Kyrgyzstan border. Driver will pick you up from Kashgar Airport. Afternoon walk through Kashgar Old Town — an organic mud-brick city of 2,000+ year-old streets, mosques, courtyards, and bazaars. Visit Id Kah Mosque (1442), the largest mosque in China and the center of Xinjiang Islam. Evening at Kashgar Bazaar, the oldest and one of the largest traditional markets in Central Asia. Overnight in Kashgar.
Day 2: Pamir Highway to Karakul Lake
Drive the Karakoram Highway — the world’s highest paved international highway — across the Pamir Plateau. Stop at the Opal Village where Uyghur miners have extracted opal for centuries. Climb to the Bulung Kul Pass (3,400m). Stop at White Sand Lake, where the dunes meet a turquoise lake. Continue to Karakul Lake (3,600m), the highest mountain lake in China. The lake reflects the peaks of Muztagh Ata (7,509m) and Kongur Tagh (7,649m). Visit the Kazakh yurt settlements. Overnight in yurt or Kashgar.
Day 3: Tashkurgan Stone Fort
Drive to Tashkurgan (Stone Fort), the ancient Tajik fort commanding the Pamir — one of the most strategic locations of the Silk Road. Visit the Tashkurgan Fort (2,000+ years old), the Stone Fort against which Alexander the Great’s armies, Genghis Khan, and the British Raj all collided. Continue to the Pamir Highway border with Pakistan. Walk the Tajik village of Tagarma. Optional Kashgar-Afghan border views. Overnight in Tashkurgan.
Day 4: Return to Kashgar & Depart
Drive back to Kashgar via the Pamir Highway. Stop at Upal Township for Uyghur-Chinese cultural visit. Visit the Abakh Khoja Mausoleum (1640 AD), the mausoleum of the royal Kashgar rulers, the largest Islamic tomb complex in China. Continue to the Handicraft Street. Afternoon flight to Urumqi.
