Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Jinan — City of Springs
Welcome to Jinan, the City of Springs — so named for its 72 artesian springs bubbling up from underground limestone aquifers. Visit Baotu Spring, the most famous of the springs, gushing from a depth of 26 meters beneath a Song Dynasty pavilion. The spring is fed by Daming Lake, where the poet Li Qingzhao composed her eternal verses. Afternoon walk through Daming Lake Park with its pavilions and lotus ponds. Evening try Jinan’s signature cuisine — including the famous “Jiu-zhuan” (九转大肠) braised pork intestine and sweet spring water tofu. Overnight in Jinan.
Day 2: Mount Tai — Sacred Mountain of Sunrise
Drive 80km to Mount Tai (1,545m). China’s most sacred mountain has been climbed by 72 emperors, more than any other. Begin ascent to Zhongtian Gate (Middle Heaven Gate), the halfway point, then continue to the South Gate of Heaven (Nantianmen). The climb is steep but magnificent — climb the 7,200+ stone steps past ancient inscriptions. Arrive at Jade Emperor Peak for the legendary sunrise (best viewed in summer or autumn). On the summit, view the Tang Dynasty inscriptions, Tang Jade Emperor’s Temple, and the Sun Viewing Peak. Descend by cable car. Overnight in Tai’an.
Day 3: Qufu — Birthplace of Confucius
Drive 60km to Qufu, birthplace of the world’s most influential philosopher. Visit the Temple of Confucius (478 BC original, rebuilt 478 AD and after every major dynasty), a 130-hectare complex with 466 buildings — the largest ancient architectural complex in China devoted to one person. See the Sepulcher of Confucius, where Confucius and 100,000+ descendants have been buried. Afternoon: visit the Kong Family Mansion, where the direct descendants of Confucius lived for 1,800 years — a walled city within the town. Evening: stay at a Confucian-family boutique hotel. Overnight in Qufu.
Day 4: Bullet Train to Qingdao — Tsingtao & Beaches
Bullet train (2.5 hours) to Qingdao, China’s “beer capital” (Tsingtao Beer). The city has a strong German colonial heritage — when the Germans leased the port in 1897, they built a Bavarian-style town center. Visit the Tsingtao Beer Museum in the original 1903 brewery — where you can sample freshly brewed beer. Walk the historic district (Bavarian-style buildings, red roofs, beer gardens). Afternoon stroll along May 4th Square — named after the 1919 student movement — with its iconic “May Wind” sculpture. Evening at the famous Pijiu Street (Beer Street) for German-themed street food. Overnight in Qingdao.
Day 5: Qingdao — Laoshan Mountain & Coastal Beauty
Morning visit to Mount Lao (Laoshan, 1,133m) — the famed “Mountain of the Immortals.” The mountain is the birthplace of Taoism, with temples dating to the Han Dynasty. Take the cable car for panoramic views of the Yellow Sea coastline. Visit Taiqing Palace, the largest Taoist temple complex in China (founded 904 AD). Walk the forested ridge path for views of the China coastline as it curves into the bay. Afternoon: leisurely walk the old Badaguan Scenic Resort — a former European residential district with German, Danish, Dutch, and Italian architectural styles. Visit the Underwater World and Yacht Marina. Optional swim in China’s cleanest urban beach. Overnight in Qingdao.
Day 6: Qingdao Morning & Depart
Morning visit to Zhanqiao Pier (1891), Qingdao’s most iconic landmark — a 440-meter sea promenade with the Huilan Pavilion standing over the waves. Visit Zhanshan Temple Park for the cherry blossoms (spring). Optional visit to the Cool Mountain Stone Tablet (Yanshan), a 1,500-year-old Qing Dynasty private garden. Afternoon departure from Qingdao Liuting Airport (or Qingdao Jiaodong International).
