Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Datong — Northern Wei Capital

Welcome to Datong, once the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) and China’s ancient second capital. Driver will pick you up from Yuyuan Airport. Visit the Huayan Temple (1038 AD Liao Dynasty, rebuilt 1140 AD), the only surviving Liao-era temple complex in China. The monastery houses the largest Liao-era bronze Buddha (still warm to the touch after 900+ years due to the heat-radiating alloy). The “Huayan” here is unique: it shows the persistence of Tibetan Buddhism across 2,000 years. Evening walk the rebuilt ancient city walls (2008) for sunset views. Overnight in Datong.

Day 2: Yungang Grottoes & Hanging Temple

Morning at the Yungang Grottoes — UNESCO World Heritage since 2001. Carved into a 1km sandstone cliff during the 5th-6th centuries, the grottoes contain 252 caves with 51,000+ Buddha statues, ranging from 13-meter giants to fingernail-sized carvings. The earliest statues show Indian Gandharan influence, while later Tang-era statues display the more Chinese style. Visit Cave 6 (the most photographed) with its 20-meter seated Buddha. Afternoon: drive 65km to the legendary Hanging Temple (悬空寺) — a temple built into a sheer cliff face 75 meters above the Jinlong Canyon. Built in 491 AD, it has survived 1,500 years without falling, supported entirely by wooden beams embedded in the rock. Walk the narrow wooden planks through the cliff halls. Overnight in Datong.

Day 3: Datong → Mount Wutai (Wutaishan)

Drive 250km to Mount Wutai (Wutaishan), one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains (representing wisdom). The mountain range has 47 active temples today and was the world’s first monastery complex (over 100 AD). Visit Tayuan Temple (Tang Dynasty 854 AD), the center of Tibetan Buddhism. Continue to Xiantong Temple, the largest surviving temple (built 58-75 AD), housing the bronze “Sutra Hall” (the only surviving bronze building in China). Walk through Dailuo Ding (a 13-story pagoda) for sweeping views. Visit the Shuxiang Temple (Buddhist hall containing 50,000+ clay and bronze figures). Overnight in Wutaishan.

Day 4: Mount Wutai → Taiyuan

Morning climb to Bodhisattva Summit (1,884m) — the highest peak. Hike the path through pine forests and 5 alpine temples. Visit the ancient “Buddha Temple of Bodhisattva.” Afternoon drive 240km to Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province. On arrival: visit Jinci Temple (BC 1022, before the Western Zhou Dynasty). The temple contains 98 ancient buildings — making it the only museum of ancient wooden architecture in China. The “Nanlao Spring” (Nanlao Quian) has been named “The Best Spring in China” by Tang emperors. Overnight in Taiyuan.

Day 5: Taiyuan → Pingyao — Shanxi Merchant History

Morning visit to the Shanxi Museum, with its rich Bronze Age artifacts. Drive 100km to Pingyao — the best-preserved ancient walled city in China (UNESCO since 1997). Visit the Pingyao Ancient City Wall (1370 AD, Ming Dynasty), the most extensive surviving city wall in China. Walk the cobblestone streets of Qingming Lane, the location of the bank-robber film “Raise the Red Lantern.” Visit the Qiao Family Compound (1756 AD) — the ancestral mansion of a Shanxi merchant clan, used as the filming location for the Zhang Yimou movie. Continue to the Ri Shengchang Bank (1823), China’s first bank. Overnight in Pingyao.

Day 6: Pingyao — Wang’s Family Compound & Hukou Waterfall

Visit the Wang Family Compound (1762-1816) — the largest family mansion in China with 1,318 rooms. The Wangs were a powerful Shanxi merchant family. The compound is a complete map of traditional Chinese architecture spanning Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist styles. Drive 4 hours to the Hukou Waterfall (Yellow River) — China’s largest yellow-water waterfall. The Yellow River thunders through a 50-meter-wide gorge, creating a thunderous 50-meter waterfall. Visit the viewing platforms and walk to the mist-soaked riverbank. Drive to Linfen. Overnight in Linfen.

Day 7: Return via Taiyuan & Depart

Drive back to Taiyuan (3 hours). Stop at Qiao Family Compound if not visited on Day 5. Lunch. Drive to Taiyuan Wusu Airport or bullet train to Beijing (3.5 hours).
