Itinerary Highlights

Day 1-3: Delhi — The Imperial Capital (as Golden Triangle 6-Day itinerary)

Days 1-3 follow the same Delhi exploration: Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Old Delhi cycle rickshaw, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk spice market, Raj Ghat, and the imperial boulevards of New Delhi.

Day 4: Delhi to Agra — The Taj Mahal at Dawn

Early morning departure for Agra. Visit Agra Fort, then the Taj Mahal at dawn on Day 5 — the full Taj experience as described in the Golden Triangle tour. The marble masterpiece needs no introduction: 17 hectares of gardens, the reflecting pool engineered for perfect symmetry, and the 32 million rupee monument (in 1653 currency) that took 22 years to build.

Day 6: Jaipur — The Pink City

Full day in Jaipur: Amber Fort jeep ascent, Sheesh Mahal mirror palace, City Palace, Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory, Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), and the bazaars of the Pink City — Johari, Bapu, and Tripolia.

Day 7: Fly to Varanasi — The Oldest Living City on Earth

Morning flight from Jaipur to Varanasi (1.5 hours). Varanasi (also called Kashi or Banaras) is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities — Mark Twain wrote: “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.” The city has been a center of learning, religion, and culture for over 3,000 years. Hinduism believes that dying in Varanasi and being cremated on the banks of the Ganges breaks the cycle of rebirth — the city is the ultimate pilgrimage destination, the “City of Light” where the sacred and the mundane merge completely on the ghats.

Afternoon: walking tour of the ghats — Varanasi’s 87 riverfront steps stretching 6.8km along the holy Ganges River (Ganga). Life on the ghats is a continuous stream: pilgrims bathing in the sacred waters, dhobis (laundry washers) beating clothes on stone slabs, yogis meditating, children flying kites, buffaloes cooling in the shallows, and the constant presence of death — bodies wrapped in gold and red cloth are carried through the narrow lanes to the burning ghats, where they are cremated on open pyres fueled by sandalwood. At Manikarnika Ghat (the main burning ghat), cremations have continued 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for over 3,000 years — approximately 300 bodies are cremated here daily. It’s a raw, powerful, and confronting experience that forces you to confront mortality — and it’s also an essential part of understanding India’s relationship with death, which is accepted as a transition rather than an ending.

Evening: Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat — the most spectacular ritual in India. As darkness falls, young Brahmin priests perform a synchronized ceremony of fire and devotion: they swing giant brass lamps filled with burning camphor in intricate patterns, the flames tracing arcs of light against the night sky. Hundreds of small leaf boats carrying flowers and candles (diyas) are released into the Ganges, creating a river of floating lights. Thousands of pilgrims, tourists, and locals gather on the ghats and boats. The chanting, the flames, the bells, the river — it’s an experience that transcends religious boundaries. Overnight in Varanasi.

Day 8: Varanasi — Dawn Boat Ride & Sarnath

Rise before dawn for the quintessential Varanasi experience: a boat ride on the Ganges at sunrise. Glide past the ghats as the first light touches the ancient temples — the golden spires of Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Varanasi’s most sacred Shiva temple), the towers of the old city rising from the riverbank. Pilgrims perform surya namaskar (sun salutation) facing the rising sun, their chanting echoing across the water. The ghats at dawn reveal the full spectrum of Indian life: a man practicing yoga, an old woman immersed in prayer, children brushing their teeth in the sacred water, and the continuing cremations at Manikarnika — the fire that never goes out.

After breakfast: visit Sarnath (10km from Varanasi), where the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya (around 528 BCE). This sermon — the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dharma) — was delivered to his five former ascetic companions, who became the first Buddhist monks. The Dhamek Stupa, built in 500 CE by Emperor Ashoka (who converted to Buddhism after the carnage of the Kalinga War), marks the exact spot of the sermon. The archaeological museum houses the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka — four lions sitting back-to-back on a circular abacus, which became the national emblem of India. Sarnath is one of Buddhism’s four holiest sites (alongside Lumbini in Nepal, Bodh Gaya, and Kushinagar), and the tranquility here is a welcome contrast to Varanasi’s intensity. Afternoon free to explore Varanasi’s lanes — get hopelessly lost in the galis (alleyways) of the old city, which are sometimes just 1m wide, filled with shops selling silk (Varanasi’s Banarasi silk saris are the finest in India), brassware, religious items, and the famous Varanasi paan (betel leaf with areca nut and spices — eat only from a reputable vendor). Overnight in Varanasi.

Day 9: Varanasi Morning — Departure

One final dawn on the ghats — each morning in Varanasi feels both eternal and unique. Transfer to Varanasi airport for departure. The journey from the Taj Mahal’s perfection to Varanasi’s sublime chaos captures India’s enduring paradox: the coexistence of extraordinary beauty and overwhelming rawness, of 5,000 years of continuous civilization and a country hurtling toward the future. India doesn’t leave you — it stays with you.
