Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Ulaanbaatar — Sukhbaatar Square & Gandan Monastery

Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Afternoon city tour: Sukhbaatar Square, National Museum of Mongolia, Gandan Monastery. Evening: traditional Mongolian dinner with throat singing performance. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 2: To the Gobi — Tsagaan Suvarga Cliffs

Drive south from UB into the Middle Gobi (6-7 hours). The transition from green steppe to semi-arid Gobi is gradual but mesmerizing — the grass becomes sparser, the hills lower, the sky somehow bigger. Stop at the Baga Gazriin Chuluu rock formations — a granite outcrop known as a meditation site for monks during the purges, with a small cave-temple hidden among the rocks. Arrive at Tsagaan Suvarga by late afternoon — the White Stupa cliffs, 60m-high escarpment of sedimentary rock revealing ancient seabed layers. Sunset over the cliffs. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 3: Yoliin Am (Vulture’s Mouth) — Ice Canyon in the Gobi

Continue south to the Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Yoliin Am Canyon: walk the deep gorge where ice persists into summer, with bearded vultures circling overhead. The canyon is also a prime spot for Siberian ibex on the upper cliffs. Continue to the Khongor Sand Dunes — arrive at the ger camp at the foot of the dunes before sunset. Watch the golden light play across the 300m-high dunes — the “Singing Dunes” of Mongolia’s Gobi. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 4: Khongor Sand Dunes — Camel Trek & Dune Summit

Morning: Bactrian camel trek through the dunes (1-2 hours). The two-humped Bactrian camels are the gentle giants of the Gobi — their massive padded feet leave tracks in the sand that you follow as the sun climbs. Afternoon: climb the highest dune (300m) for a 360° view of the dune sea — the physical challenge of climbing sand (like climbing a liquid mountain) is rewarded with the silence and grandeur of the view. Visit a camel-herding family to taste camel milk products and learn about Gobi nomadic life — these families move their gers 4-6 times a year following pasture and maintain a herd that represents their entire wealth. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 5: Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs) — Dinosaur Cemetery

Morning: visit the Khongor Oasis near the dunes — a stream of fresh water emerges from the base of the dunes, creating a strip of green in the endless gold, a genuine desert oasis. Then drive to Bayanzag, the Flaming Cliffs. On the way: stop at the Khavtsgait Petroglyphs — a series of Bronze Age (3,000+ years old) rock carvings on a hillside, depicting ibex, deer, horses, and hunting scenes. The petroglyphs were created by the ancient inhabitants of the Gobi long before the Mongol Empire — their meaning remains partly mysterious, but they offer a direct connection to the people who lived in this desert millennia ago.

Arrive at Bayanzag in the afternoon. Explore the cliffs — the red-orange sandstone glows with a fire-like intensity in the late afternoon sun (hence “Flaming Cliffs,” named by Roy Chapman Andrews in the 1920s). Walk the area where the first dinosaur eggs were discovered — you may see fossil bone fragments in the sandstone, a reminder that this was a lush, swampy landscape 70 million years ago. Visit the small museum at the nearby tourist camp displaying replicas and some original fossil fragments. Sunset at the cliffs — the orange and red hues intensify to a blazing spectacle as the sun drops below the horizon. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 6: Ongi Monastery — Ruins of a Buddhist Empire

Drive to the Ongi River valley (4-5 hours). Visit the ruins of Ongi Monastery — once one of Mongolia’s largest Buddhist monasteries with over 1,000 monks across two complexes on either side of the river. Destroyed in the 1937 purges, the ruins today are hauntingly beautiful: crumbling stupas, sections of walls, and the foundations of temples spread across the valley. The small museum tells the story of the monastery’s destruction, and the rebuilt temple hosts a handful of monks who have returned. Hike up the hill behind the ruins for a sweeping view of the Ongi Valley at sunset — the late light on the ruins and the river, with the Gobi stretching to the horizon on all sides, is profoundly meditative. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 7: Return to Ulaanbaatar — Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex

Drive back to UB (6-7 hours). On the way: visit the Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue at Tsonjin Boldog, 54km east of UB. This is the world’s largest equestrian statue — a 40m-tall stainless steel statue of Chinggis Khaan on horseback, standing atop a 10m-high visitor center. The statue sits at the legendary site where Temujin (the future Chinggis Khaan) found a golden whip and was declared the future ruler of all Mongols. Inside the base: a museum of the Bronze Age and Xiongnu (Hunnu) archaeological artifacts from the area, a giant Mongolian boot (a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest boot, 9m tall), and an elevator that takes you to the horse’s head — from the observation deck between the horse’s ears, you have a 360° view of the steppe stretching to the horizon. The sheer scale of the statue — visible from kilometers away — embodies Mongolia’s deep reverence for the Great Khaan. Return to UB by evening. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Ulaanbaatar.

Day 8: Morning Ulaanbaatar — Departure

Morning: visit the Zaisan Memorial (a Soviet-era monument on a hill south of UB commemorating Soviet-Mongolian friendship and World War II victories — climb the 300 steps for the best panoramic city view). Last-minute cashmere shopping at the Gobi Cashmere factory store or the State Department Store. Afternoon: transfer to airport for departure — with dinosaur fossils, singing dunes, and the hospitality of Gobi nomads in your memory.
