Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Harbin
Welcome to China’s winter capital. Evening at Ice and Snow World — the world’s largest ice sculpture festival, a frozen metropolis of LED-lit crystal castles. Overnight in Harbin.
Day 2: Harbin City Treasures
Saint Sophia Cathedral, Central Street’s European architecture, and the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Art Expo. Afternoon at the frozen Songhua River for ice activities. Overnight in Harbin.
Day 3: China Snow Town
Drive through snow-covered forests to the legendary Snow Town, where 2 meters of snow form mushroom-like caps on traditional wooden houses. Photographer’s paradise at golden hour. Overnight in Snow Town (heated kang bed).
Day 4: Jingpo Lake — Volcanic Winter Wonder
Drive to Jingpo Lake (Mirror Lake), China’s largest alpine lava-dammed lake. In winter, the Diaoshuilou Waterfall freezes into a massive ice curtain — a 40-meter wall of frozen water. Watch local fishermen perform the ancient tradition of ice-hole fishing, cutting through meter-thick ice to pull nets of fat winter fish. Overnight near Jingpo Lake.
Day 5: Changbaishan — Heavenly Lake & Hot Springs
Journey to Changbaishan (Mount Paektu), the sacred volcano on the China-North Korea border. Take the snowmobile to the crater rim at 2,189m to see Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), a 384m-deep volcanic lake frozen solid in winter — a perfect white disc filling the crater. The view of North Korean territory from the summit is eerily quiet. Descend for a soak in the natural hot springs, steam rising as -20°C air meets 60°C water — utterly surreal. Overnight at Changbaishan hot spring resort.
Day 6: Jilin — The Rime Kingdom
Drive to Jilin City, one of the world’s four great rime (hoar frost) destinations. The unique geography — warm, moist water from the Fengman Dam meeting sub-zero air — creates perfect conditions for shùguà (tree hanging), where frost crystallizes on every branch of the willow trees along the Songhua River, turning them into dazzling white coral. The best viewing is at Wusong Island (Rime Island) at dawn, when the rising sun turns the frost-sculpted landscape golden. Overnight in Jilin.
Day 7: Changchun & Depart
Drive to Changchun, capital of Jilin Province. Visit the Puppet Emperor’s Palace, where Henry Pu Yi — China’s last emperor — lived as a Japanese puppet ruler of Manchukuo from 1932-1945. The contrast between this dark chapter of history and the winter beauty of the preceding days is profound. Transfer to Changchun airport.
