Day 1: Arrive Harbin — Welcome to the Ice City

Arrive at Harbin Taiping International Airport. Harbin, the capital of China’s northernmost province Heilongjiang, earned its nickname “Ice City” honestly — winter temperatures routinely drop to -30°C. But the cold is the point. Transfer to your centrally-located hotel, then bundle up for an evening at the legendary Ice and Snow World. This isn’t a few ice sculptures in a park — it’s an entire frozen city covering 750,000 square meters. Ice blocks harvested from the frozen Songhua River are carved into full-scale castles, pagodas, slides, and even functioning ice bars by artists from around the world. At night, LED lights embedded in the ice transform everything into a glowing crystal kingdom. The scale is genuinely hard to comprehend until you’re standing in it. Overnight in Harbin.

Day 2: Harbin City — Russian Legacy & Winter Fun

Morning at the Saint Sophia Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in East Asia — a flamboyant Byzantine-style building of green onion domes that looks airlifted from Moscow. Built by Russian expatriates in 1907, it now houses the Harbin Architecture and Art Gallery. Walk Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie), a 1.4km pedestrian avenue of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings — more European than any other street in China. Afternoon: Sun Island Park for the International Snow Sculpture Art Expo, where artists transform massive blocks of compressed snow into intricate, detailed sculptures that look like marble from a distance. Local lunch: try guo bao rou (twice-cooked sweet-and-sour pork, a Harbin invention) and the city’s famous red sausage (Russian-style kolbasa). Evening: stroll the frozen Songhua River — it becomes a winter playground of ice bumper cars, dog sleds, and ice slides. Overnight in Harbin.

Day 3: China Snow Town — Fairytale Village

Drive 280km through the snow-covered forests of Heilongjiang to China Snow Town (Zhongguo Xuexiang). This former logging village in the Shuangfeng Forest Farm has become one of China’s most photogenic destinations — and for good reason. The village sits in a mountain basin where moist Pacific air collides with Siberian cold, dumping up to 2 meters of snow annually. The snow here is different — thick and sticky, it forms rounded “mushroom” caps on the roofs of traditional wooden houses, creating a scene straight from a Christmas card. Wander the main street past farmhouses with red lanterns glowing against the white snow. For photographers, the Panorama Viewing Platform on the hillside offers the classic shot at sunrise and sunset. Evening: stay in a heated kang bed (traditional brick bed warmed by a fire below) in a local guesthouse. Overnight in China Snow Town.

Day 4: Snow Town Morning & Yabuli Ski Resort

Catch the sunrise over Snow Town — the morning light on those rounded snow caps is pure magic. After breakfast, drive to Yabuli International Ski Resort, China’s largest and best-equipped ski area. Yabuli hosted the 1996 Asian Winter Games and features 49 trails spanning all difficulty levels on the slopes of Guokui Mountain, plus the world’s longest beginner slope at 5km. Even if you’ve never skied, this is the place to learn — gentle practice areas and patient instructors. Chairlift ride to the summit offers panoramic views of the Changbai Mountain range, snow-covered in every direction. After a full afternoon of skiing, return to Harbin. Overnight in Harbin.

Day 5: Harbin Morning & Depart

Visit the Siberian Tiger Park, home to over 500 Siberian tigers (also called Amur tigers) in semi-wild conditions. From the safety of a caged bus, watch these magnificent predators — the largest cats in the world — stalk within meters of your window. They’re most active in the cold, padding through the snow with an unnerving combination of power and grace. Afternoon transfer to airport.
